We have surveyed the ophthalmic literature of the last five years in an attempt to evaluate the use and usefulness of Rose Bengal staining as an aid to differential diagnosis in dry eyes. Included both as a criterion and as an adjunct measure of disease progression, Rose Bengal scores of patients with different dry eye conditions overlap, sometimes to a considerable extent. A mechanistic link between staining with this dye and disease etiology is unlikely; however, Rose Bengal could be a surrogate marker of changes in ocular surface physiology. The question whether the extent and pattern of staining with Rose Bengal provide the clinician with information not available from other tests, and in particular from fluorescein staining of the ocular surface, has to be answered positively, though the nature of this information is not clearly understood. A more widespread recognition that Rose Bengal is not a vital dye is necessary in order not to bias the interpretation of experimental results.

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) exhibit dynamic heterogeneity, where the intricate and dynamic hydrogen bonding within the DES mediates dynamic spatial variation in the DES local environment. The Type III DES composed of choline chloride and glycerol (ChCl:Gly) exhibits this effect prominently, and we report on the observed local organization and its dependence on system composition using the time-resolved reorientation dynamics of three illustrative chromophores of different polarities: perylene (neutral, nonpolar), oxazine 725 (cation, polar) and rose bengal (dianion, polar). Our findings demonstrate that the environments sensed by all three chromophores are markedly different than that predicted by the bulk viscosity of the DES, and that these local environments exhibit remarkably little change as the mole ratio of the DES constituents is varied.

Standard photosensitizers, including Rose Bengal, Methylene Blue, and porphyrins, are widely employed as benchmarks for determining Φ. Metabolic dysregulation triggered by nutrient influx at reperfusion onset induces reactive oxygen species (ROS) burst and cellular injury, contributing to the detrimental effects observed in ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. Thus, implementing controlled reperfusion emerges as a superior cardioprotective strategy to alleviate reperfusion injury. Kinesin KIF5B transports GLUT4- and CD36-containing vesicles to the plasma membrane, facilizing the import of glucose and fatty acids into cells, suggesting a role in controlled reperfusion.

Oximes are widely used precursors in synthetic chemistry due to their broad availability and versatile chemical properties, in which N-O bond fragmentation represents a key reactivity mode. However, these transformations typically require the use of oxygen-protected oximes, and a general strategy to directly utilize free oximes remains challenging due to their vulnerability to side reaction pathways, rendering low tendency towards N-OH bond cleavage. Here we report a unified platform to achieve direct cyclization of unprotected oximes with enals, as well as other coupling partners through dual copper/organophotoredox catalysis under green light irradiation.
