Laser interference lithography (LIL) is a straightforward technique to prepare linear micropatterns for regulating cellular adhesion behaviors on polymer substratum. This process is based on selective laser ablation directly duplicating the interference patterns of two or more coherent laser beams onto the polymer surface. Micropatterns prepared by LIL on poly(ethylene terephthalate) and Thermanox were characterized using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and white light interferometer while the chemical surface modification induced by laser was analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The AFM photographs show that the micropatterns are well-defined and of great consistency. Polymer properties and laser parameters related to LIL as well as laser ablation mechanisms are discussed in this technical note.

Chemical modifications are widely used in research fields such as quantitative proteomics and interaction analyses. Chemical-modification targets can be roughly divided into four categories, including those that integrate isotope labels for quantification purposes, probe the structures of proteins through covalent labeling or cross-linking, incorporate labels to improve the ionization or dissociation of characteristic peptides in complex mixtures, and affinity-enrich various poorly abundant protein translational modifications (PTMs). A chemical modification reaction needs to be simple and efficient for use in proteomics analysis, and should be performed without any complicated process for preparing the labeling reagent.

The physical picture for photocurrent injection and coherent control in intrinsic graphene under two-color laser excitation remains obscure. Previously, photocurrent injection of intrinsic graphene was attributed to the quantum interference between two electronic transition pathways of single-photon and two-photon absorptions as well as layer-to-layer coupling. Here, we show that quantum interference between stimulated electronic Raman scattering and single-photon absorption plays a very important role in contributing to the total photocurrent, while interlayer coupling does not sufficiently affect the photocurrent injection, which is in contrast to the previous interpretation of the experimental results on photocurrent injection and coherent control.

A new methodology is presented for the rapid, specific, and sensitive detection of irinotecan (CPT-11), a chemotherapeutic agent utilized in the treatment of cancer, along with its metabolically active derivative, SN-38, via laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (LDI MS). The method includes the detection of camptothecin (CPT), which can be utilized as an internal standard for the quantitative assessment of both CPT-11 and SN-38 in mouse serum. The approach utilizes a plasmonic two-dimensional (2D) black phosphorus nanosheet (BPN)-gold nanomatrix (BP@Au) in LDI MS.

Reducing the time required for the detection of bacteria in blood samples is a critical area of investigation in the field of clinical diagnosis. Positive blood culture samples often require a plate culture stage due to the interference of blood cells and proteins, which can result in significant delays before the isolation of single colonies suitable for matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) analysis. In this study, we developed a non-specific enrichment strategy based on SiO-encapsulated FeO nanoparticles combined with MALDI-TOF MS for direct identification of bacteria from aqueous environments or positive blood culture samples.

Synthetic antioxidants are often introduced to biodiesel to increase its oxidative stability, and -butyl hydroquinone (TBHQ) has been selected due to its high efficiency for this purpose. The monitoring of antioxidants in biodiesel therefore provides information on the oxidative stability of biodiesels. Herein, a laser-induced graphene (LIG) electrode is introduced as a new sensor for detecting -butyl hydroquinone (TBHQ) in biodiesel samples.
