1-Ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC) was tested for interference with the Lowry method of protein determination. The EDC interference was nearly additive at both 660 and 750 nm. Blue-colored complex developed in the case of EDC and showed maximum absorbance at 750 nm, similar to the bovine serum albumin (BSA) estimation. In time response analysis, blue-colored complex was developed after 30 min of incubation in both cases (EDC and BSA); therefore, it followed the same kinetic pattern of color development as that of BSA. Interference is believed to be caused by the reduction of the folin-ciocalteu reagent by EDC, resulting in increased blue-colored complex and apparently causing increased protein content of the sample.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers developed a method to create circularly polarized luminescence materials with adjustable colors by using charge-transfer complexation in chiral supramolecular polymers.
  • By varying the strength of charge transfer between specific molecules, they achieved a wide range of luminescent colors from blue to red, depending on the polymer structure.
  • The team also found that mixing different luminescent materials in micelles can produce white-light circularly polarized luminescence, enhancing the potential applications in 3D displays and photonics.

Background: Resveratrol, a natural polyphenol compound used as an ingredient in dietary supplements, and pharmaceuticals, has gained significant attention due to its potential health benefits. However, the accurate and sensitive determination of resveratrol in complex matrices remains a challenge. In this study, we propose the utilization of bimetallic porous Mn/Co oxide nanosheets (MnCoO-NSs) as catalysts for the colorimetric determination of resveratrol.

Background: Neither a TYRP1-mediated highly conserved genetic network underlying skin color towards optimum defense nor the pathological tendency of its mutation is well understood. The Oujiang Color Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio var. color) as a model organism, offering valuable insights into genetics, coloration, aquaculture practices, and environmental health.

The accurate and sensitive detection of metallothionein (MT) is of great significance in the fields of biomedical, toxicological and environmental sciences. In this work, based on the high affinity interaction between MT and the heavy metal ions of Hg and the significant signal amplification capability of Cas12a/crRNA enzyme as well, we report a simple and highly sensitive method for visual detection of MT, a biomarker in fish for heavy metal ion-induced water bio-pollution. The target MT molecules bind Hg in the Hg- complexed hairpin DNA probes to unfold the hairpin structure into ssDNAs, which hybridize with the partial dsDNA duplexes via strand displacement to yield specific sequence-containing dsDNAs.

In this study, we proposed a colorimetric probe as S, N-carbon dot-decorated Ce-MOF (S, N-CD@Ce-MOF) for the dual detection of mercury and thiophanate methyl (TM), which are simultaneously present pollutants in the environment and foodstuffs. These pollutants cause serious threats to human health, such as carcinogenicity and neurovirulence. Herein, we synthesized S, N-CD@Ce-MOF using the hydrothermal method and applied it to a "turn-off-on" probe to detect mercury and TM using the colorimetric method in water and food samples.
