Influenza-associated mortality in Hong Kong.

Published: December 2004

Background: The impact of influenza on mortality in countries in subtropical and tropical regions is poorly quantified. Estimation of influenza-related illness in warm-climate regions is more difficult, because the seasonality of virus circulation is less well-defined. Partly as a result of these factors, influenza vaccine is grossly underutilized in the tropics, even for individuals >or=65 years of age.

Methods: Weekly numbers of deaths were modeled by Poisson regression, and excess deaths attributable to influenza in Hong Kong were estimated for 1996-1999. Comparison of weekly mortality during periods of influenza predominance and periods of low influenza activity was used to derive an alternative estimate of influenza-associated mortality.

Results: Estimates derived from the Poisson model indicated that influenza resulted in 7.3 deaths per 100,000 population per year (95% confidence interval [CI], 3.1-11.4) from cardiorespiratory disease among individuals aged 40-65 years and 102.0 deaths per 100,000 per population per year (95% CI, 61.2-142.7) among individuals aged >or=65 years. Although respiratory diseases accounted for the majority of influenza-related deaths, influenza also contributed to 13.8% (95% CI, 4.8%- 22.7%) and 5.3% (95% CI, 1.2%-9.3%) of deaths related to ischemic heart disease.

Conclusion: Influenza is associated with deaths due to ischemic heart disease as well from respiratory diseases. Overall influenza-associated mortality in a region with a warm climate, such as Hong Kong, is comparable with that documented in temperate regions. The need for influenza vaccination in tropical regions needs to be reassessed.

The use of literal prompts (LPs) and inferential prompts (IPs) in shared book reading (SBR) facilitates children's use of language and promotes their thinking and understanding about the stories discussed and beyond. Furthermore, SBR provides a platform for mildly autistic children to have multiple rounds of communication with educators. This study investigated the contribution of LPs and IPs on the language development and affective factors of language learning in mildly autistic children.

Transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), such as molybdenum disulfide (MoS), have emerged as a generation of nonprecious catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), largely due to their theoretical hydrogen adsorption energy close to that of platinum. However, efforts to activate the basal planes of TMDs have primarily centered around strategies such as introducing numerous atomic vacancies, creating vacancy-heteroatom complexes, or applying significant strain, especially for acidic media. These approaches, while potentially effective, present substantial challenges in practical large-scale deployment.

Introduction: Bronchiectasis exacerbation (BE) is associated with unfavorable sequelae in other organs such as the cardiovascular system; data regarding its impact on adverse term renal outcomes, however, is lacking.

Methods: A territory-wide retrospective cohort study was conducted in Hong Kong between 1/1/1993 and 31/12/2017. All patients with bronchiectasis followed in the public healthcare system in 2017 were classified as "Exacerbators" or "Non-Exacerbators," and their adverse renal outcomes (renal progression [decrease in eGFR by 30 mL/min lasted for more than 12 months during follow up], acute kidney injury [AKI], and annual rate of eGFR decline) in the ensuing 7 years were compared.

Bioinspired Smart Triboelectric Soft Pneumatic Actuator-Enabled Hand Rehabilitation Robot.

Quantitative assessment for post-stroke spasticity remains a significant challenge due to the encountered variable resistance during passive stretching, which can lead to the widely used modified Ashworth scale (MAS) for spasticity assessment depending heavily on rehabilitation physicians. To address these challenges, a high-force-output triboelectric soft pneumatic actuator (TENG-SPA) inspired by a lobster tail is developed. The bioinspired TENG-SPA can generate approximately 20 N at 0.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), known for their exceptional in situ encapsulation and precise release capabilities, are emerging as pioneering drug delivery systems. This study introduces a hypoxia-responsive COF designed to encapsulate the chemotherapy drug gambogic acid (GA) in situ. Bimetallic gold-palladium islands were grown on UiO-66-NH (UiO) to form UiO@Au-Pd (UAPi), which were encapsulated with GA through COF membrane formation, resulting in a core-shell structure (UAPiGC).
