A 65-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of dyspnea on exertion. He had oculocutaneous albinism innately and his parents were consanguineous. His chest roentgenogram on admission showed reticulo-nodular infiltrates and cystic changes throughout both lung fields, and 7 cm mass in the left middle field. Cytology of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) revealed macrophages containing ceroid. The diagnosis of HPS was made clinically and the tumor was diagnosed as poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma of the lung. He died of respiratory failure. By autopsy, additional well-differentiated adenocarcinoma was detected. Cytology of BALF was useful to confirm ceroid accumulation in the lung.

Background: The precise identification of pathogens responsible for community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in children is essential for effective treatment. However, the performance of targeted next-generation sequencing (tNGS) in the detection of pathogens associated with CAP in children remains unclear.
Methods: In this study, 216 children diagnosed with CAP were enrolled, and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) samples underwent detection through tNGS, culture, and multiplex quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR).

Objective The prevalence of drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) strains is exacerbating the global burden of tuberculosis (TB), highlighting the urgent need for new treatment strategies for TB. Methods The recombinant adenovirus vaccine expressing cyclic di-adenosine monophosphate (c-di-AMP) phosphodiesterase B (CnpB) (rAd-CnpB), was administered to normal mice via mucosal immunization, either alone or in combination with drug therapy, to treat Mtb respiratory infections in mice.Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to detect the levels of antibodies in serum and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF).

While the pulmonary effects of regular waterpipe smoking (R-WPS) are well-defined, the impact of occasional waterpipe smoking (O-WPS) on the lungs remains less established. This study investigated the pulmonary toxicity and underlying mechanisms of O-WPS versus R-WPS following 6 months of exposure, focusing on histopathology, inflammation in the lung, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), and plasma, as well as oxidative stress, genotoxicity, mitochondrial dysfunction, and the expression of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) in lung homogenates. Exposure to both O-WPS and R-WPS resulted in significant histological changes, including increased numbers of alveolar macrophages and lymphocytes, as well as interstitial fibrosis.

Macrophage (Mph) polarization and functional activity play an important role in the development of inflammatory lung conditions. The previously widely used bimodal classification of Mph into M1 and M2 does not adequately reflect the full range of changes in polarization and functional diversity observed in Mph in response to various stimuli and disease states. Here, we have developed a model for the direct assessment of Mph from bronchial alveolar lavage fluid (BALF) functional alterations, in terms of phagocytosis activity, depending on external stimuli, such as exposure to a range of bacteria (, and ).
