The hepatitis B virus (HBV) infects approximately 290 million people globally, with chronic infection sustained by persistent viral gene expression. Recent single-cell analyses of HBV viral transcripts have uncovered novel features of HBV transcription and provided fresh insights into its regulation at the single-cell level. In this review, we summarize the latest advancements in understanding HBV viral transcription in individual hepatocytes and highlight emerging technologies that hold promise for future research.

Immunosenescence: Aging and Immune System Decline.

Vaccines (Basel)

November 2024

Department of Biological Sciences, Kean University, Union, NJ 07083, USA.

Immunosenescence, a systematic reduction in the immune system connected with age, profoundly affects the health and well-being of elderly individuals. This review outlines the hallmark features of immunosenescence, including thymic involution, inflammaging, cellular metabolic adaptations, and hematopoietic changes, and their impact on immune cells such as macrophages, neutrophils, T cells, dendritic cells, B cells, and natural killer (NK) cells. Thymic involution impairs the immune system's capacity to react to novel antigens by reducing thymopoiesis and shifting toward memory T cells.

Inflammation serves as a vital response to diverse harmful stimuli like infections, toxins, or tissue injuries, aiding in the elimination of pathogens and tissue repair. However, persistent inflammation can lead to chronic diseases. Peptide therapeutics have gained attention for their specificity in targeting cells, yet their development remains costly and time-consuming.

The Importance of Bright Spotty Lesions on Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Predicting Chronic Neuropathic Pain in Myelitis.

J Clin Med

December 2024

Department of Neurology, School of Medicine, Ajou University Medical Center, Ajou University, Suwon 16499, Republic of Korea.

: Chronic neuropathic pain (CNP) stands as one of the most debilitating complications in patients with myelitis owing to its challenging management. Bright spotty lesions (BSLs) are frequently observed in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), but few reports have discussed CNP in myelitis. We aim to demonstrate that BSLs could be one of the potential prognostic factors for CNP development in myelitis.
