Small spheroids for head and neck cartilage tissue engineering.

Sci Rep

December 2024

Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Medical Faculty Mannheim, University of Heidelberg, Mannheim, Germany.

The demand for cartilage reconstruction in the head and neck region arises frequently due to trauma, malignancies, and hereditary diseases. Traditional tissue engineering produces cartilage from a small biopsy by combining biomaterials and expanded cells. However, this top-down approach is associated with several limitations, including the non-uniform distribution of cells, lack of physiological cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions, and compromised mechanical properties and tissue architecture.

Background: Systematic reviews, such as those prepared by Cochrane, are the strongest evidence on which to base recommendations in clinical guidelines. Network meta-analysis (NMA) can be used to combine the results of studies to compare multiple treatments, which is advantageous over pair-wise meta-analysis (PW-MA) that compares two treatments. We aimed to summarise which, when, where, who, and why Cochrane Reviews that applied NMA were cited in guidelines; and to compare the citation of NMA reviews in guidelines with PW-MA reviews.

Background And Objective: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a progressive hemodynamic condition associated with significant morbidity and mortality, especially in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Therefore, the objective of this network meta-analysis (NMA) is to compare the efficacy of various pulmonary vasodilators in perioperative control of PH among patients undergoing mitral valve replacement surgery (MVRS), aiming to address the existing knowledge gap and improve perioperative outcomes.

Methods: Electronic databases including PubMed, Cochrane Central Registry of Controlled Trials, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science (WOS) from inception to 17 September 2024.

Epoxy-modified phosphorus pentasulfide (EPMPS) formulation was developed for the supported recovery of uranium from aquatic environments. The selected components of the prepared formulation were tailored to produce a rigid foamed polymeric material that was rich in phosphorus, nitrogen, sulfur and oxygen atoms, thus increasing chelating bonding possibilities with uranium. FT-IR and SEM were applied to physically characterize the resulting sorbent.

Article Synopsis
  • This study compared the effectiveness and safety of biologics and small molecules for treating adults with moderately-to-severely active ulcerative colitis (UC).
  • A systematic review and Bayesian network meta-analysis were conducted, including data from 30 studies for induction dosing and 22 for maintenance dosing of various treatments.
  • Results showed that while many treatments had similar efficacy, mirikizumab and upadacitinib stood out for improving clinical response and remission, suggesting mirikizumab is a promising option for ongoing treatment.
