The clinical behavior of Concise and Prisma Shield sealants for pit and fissure was analyzed by clinical/photographic evaluation. A hematoxylin-based staining solution was applied to the occlusal surface 7 days, 18 months, 36 months, and 11 years after the occlusal sealing, thus allowing the sealant material on the surface to be checked. At each analysis time, each occlusal surface was photographed, and the photographs corresponding to each time were submitted to clinical/photographic evaluation. Although the sealant materials showed marginal alterations over time, they did not require reapplication because the region composed of the pit and fissure remained covered.

Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry, Centre for Dental Education and Research, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India.

Clinical photographic documentation is recommended as part of the standardized clinical evaluation of traumatized patients according to the most current International Association of Dental Traumatology guidelines for the management of traumatic dental injuries (TDIs), published in 2020. The use of current technology such as mobile smartphones and the emergence of teledentistry for direct communication between dentists and with patients have increased the need to improve the knowledge and skills for contemporary clinical photographic documentation procedures at the dental office as well as at the accident site. The purpose of this review is to include findings from the available literature and discuss modern techniques, contemporary equipment, accessories and developments that can be used by both patients and dental professionals for proper clinical documentation after TDIs.

Article Synopsis
  • Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common type of oral cancer, but its five-year survival rate is only about 50%, especially when detected late.
  • A study involving 1470 patients explored using smartphone clinical images and deep learning methods for early detection and differentiation of OSCC from similar lesions that need urgent biopsies.
  • The predictive model for OSCC showed high efficacy, achieving an AUC of 0.96, with particularly improved accuracy (AUC 1.00) for lesions located in specific areas like the lingual mucosa and floor of the mouth.

Background/purpose: The application of artificial intelligence diagnosis based on deep learning in the medical field has been widely accepted. We aimed to evaluate convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for automated classification and detection of recurrent aphthous ulcerations (RAU), normal oral mucosa, and other common oral mucosal diseases in clinical oral photographs.

Materials And Methods: The study included 785 clinical oral photographs, which was divided into 251 images of RAU, 271 images of the normal oral mucosa, and 263 images of other common oral mucosal diseases.

: The tongue mucosa often changes due to various local and systemic diseases or conditions. This study aimed to investigate whether deep learning can help detect abnormal regions on the dorsal tongue surface in patients and healthy adults. : The study collected 175 clinical photographic images of the dorsal tongue surface, which were divided into 7782 cropped images classified into normal, abnormal, and non-tongue regions and trained using the VGG16 deep learning model.
