Vitrectomy is the most common surgical technique performed in eyes with vitreoretinal disease. The development and widespread use of vitreous substitutes has revolutionized vitreoretinal surgery and improved anatomic and visual results. The three most common types of vitreous substitutes available in North America include silicone oil, intraocular gas, and perfluorocarbon liquid. Each of these agents has unique properties, allowing completely different roles of the agents in vitreoretinal surgery. The physical properties, clinical indications, and potential complications of these agents are described.

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is a polymer that can be used as a vitreous substitute. To fulfill the need for PDMS on a large scale, synthesis of PDMS in a large number is also needed. Therefore, intensive research is needed to produce PDMS in large quantities.

This study demonstrates the potential of secondary aluminum dross (SAD) to enhance the vitrifying hazardous waste incineration fly ash (FA) and bottom slag (BS). Based on the CaO-SiO-AlO ternary phase diagram, a liquid phase can be achieved at relatively low temperatures by carefully adjusting the AlO content, particularly when the CaO to SiO ratio is around 0.66.

Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of two third-generation resorbable biomaterials-F18 bioglass and β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP)-in promoting new bone formation in post-extraction sockets in rats. β-TCP, a synthetic porous ceramic, is well-established in clinical use, while F18 bioglass, a novel silica based bioglass.
Methods: After extraction of the right upper incisor of 45 rats, the sockets were filled either with F18 or β-TCP, or left to naturally fill with a blood clot in control group.
