Boron and selenium concentrations from 112 water wells in an irrigated agricultural region of south Texas were compiled, mapped, and statistically analyzed. Wells in the study area produce water from the Gulf Coast Aquifer System, comprising coastward sloping beds of clay, silt, sand, and gravel. Nearly 84 percent of boron observations exceeded the 600 ug/L advisory level for drinking water, 70% exceeded the 1250 ug/L level for sensitive crops, and 24% exceeded the 3750 ug/L level for tolerant crops. Additionally, 21% of selenium observations exceeded the 20 ug/L advisory level for irrigation water, and five percent surpassed the 50 ug/L standard for drinking water. Many wells with high boron concentrations also had high selenium concentrations, and several clusters of high concentrations were in irrigated parts of the study area. However, there was no association between selenium and well depth, and a direct rather than inverse association between boron and well depth. Progressively brackish water in downdip reaches of the aquifer largely controls observed boron patterns. Both irrigation practices and prevailing groundwater chemistry significantly influence selenium concentrations in the study area.

This study aimed to investigate the mechanism by which Se in regulates the proliferation and apoptosis of sheep Leydig cells via the miR-200a/NRF pathway. The cells were isolated and purified from the testes of 8-month-old sheep via a Percoll density gradient. After the cells were treated with different concentrations of Se (0, 2.

Nanoselenium shows potential trends in improving plant health and food quality. In this study, different concentrations of nanoselenium were sprayed on the leaves of alfalfa. Compared to the control, nanoselenium (100 mg·L) significantly increased SeMet and SeMeCys contents in the roots, stems, and leaves of alfalfa.

The plasma selenoprotein P (SELENOP) concentration leveling out was thought to represent saturation of the functional selenium body pool and an appropriate supply of selenium to all tissues, indicating that the necessary amount of selenium had been supplied. Based on the selenium intake when SELENOP reaches saturation, the estimated average requirement (EAR) of selenium was set as 50 μg/d, and the recommended nutrient intake (RNI) was 60 μg/d for Chinese general population. According a recent study, "lactating Chinese women with the optimal daily selenium intake" was defined, and the adequate intake (AI) of 0‒6 months old infants was set as 15 μg/d, and 20 μg/d was calculated for 7‒12 months old infants.

Humans are exposed to toxic methylmercury mainly by consuming marine fish, in particular top predator species like billfishes or tunas. In seafood risk assessments, mercury is assumed to be mostly present as organic methylmercury in predatory fishes; yet high percentages of inorganic mercury were recently reported in marlins, suggesting markedly different methylmercury metabolism across species. We quantified total mercury and methylmercury concentrations in muscle of four billfish species from the Indian and the Pacific oceans to address this knowledge gap.
