Unlabelled: In 1991 the authority of psychiatric committees responsible for judicial decisions concerning mentally ill individuals hospitalized compulsorily was greatly extended. The committees' work procedures have gradually been established despite lack of binding rules and regulations, often evolving from the dynamics of the field.

Methods: The study population included 92 hospitalized patients. The examination was performed by administering a questionnaire, reading a protocol of the latest committee hearing and perusing the patient record.

Results: The committee tends to decide gradually about discharge from hospitalization and sometimes to include it as part of a rehabilitation process. The reasoning leading to discharge is generally from the field of law.

Conclusions: Tension between medical and legal approaches often underlies psychiatric committee work. Generally, the committee tends to accept the position of the treating physicians. This may indicate that the two approaches are drawing closer to one another and that they have learned to work together cooperatively and fruitfully.

The ubiquity of countertransferential and other personal responses in progression deliberations.

Int J Psychoanal

December 2024

Training and Supervising Analyst, Faculty and former Chair, Student Progression Committee, Psychoanalytic Association of New York (PANY) affiliated with NYU Grossman School of Medicine, New York, NY, USA.

Countertransferential and other types of personal responses to candidates are inevitable among psychoanalytic educators, whether they be supervisors, progression advisors, the progression committee as a whole, or course instructors. Nonetheless many educators remain unaware of these phenomena - despite the robust literature on this subject in supervisors - perhaps because we do not like to think of ourselves as having potentially deleterious personal reactions to younger colleagues with whom we have significant and highly valued relationships. This paper emphasizes the role of such phenomena in progression advisors' deliberations about candidates' development, as well as in the committee as a whole - a subject not addressed in the literature.

Objective: This study investigated spaced transcranial direct current stimulation for major depressive disorder, focusing on feasibility.

Methods: In a prospective open-label study, 30 participants with major depressive disorder were enrolled to receive a 50-session transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) treatment over 2 weeks. The feasibility, safety, tolerability, and preliminary therapeutic effects of this tDCS protocol were assessed using the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D-17) and the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) at baseline and 1-week and 4-week follow-ups, as well as with the 6-item HAM-D (HAM-D-6) daily during treatment.

Background: The global incidence of infertility is increasing, and infertility has become an important medical and social issue. With the widespread application of in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET) technology, the mental health problems of patients undergoing this treatment have gradually attracted widespread attention. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships among the level of hope, the fertility quality of life and negative emotions of patients who underwent IVF-ET treatment for the first time to provide a scientific basis for subsequent psychological support interventions.

Background: Patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) frequently experience sleep disturbance and psychological distress, such as depression and anxiety, which may have a negative impact on their health status and functional abilities. To gain a more comprehensive understanding of the symptoms of depression, anxiety, and sleep disturbance in patients with OSA, the current study utilized network analysis to examine the interconnections among these symptoms.

Methods: Depressive and anxiety symptoms were evaluated using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and sleep disturbance symptoms were evaluated using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI).
