Several studies have connected brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) with treatment response to neuroleptics. In recent studies, the BDNF expression was reduced by typical neuroleptics. We conducted a retrospective study on 94 patients with schizophrenia and 98 controls. The BDNF G196A and C270T polymorphisms are not associated with treatment response to typical neuroleptics or with age at first hospitalization. Moreover, these polymorphisms of the BDNF gene are not associated with the risk of schizophrenia.

Rosacea is a common chronic inflammatory condition primarily affecting middle-aged women. It presents with flushing, erythema, telangiectasia, papules, pustules, phymatous changes, and ocular involvement. Although typically grouped into four subtypes-erythematotelangiectatic, papulopustular, ocular, and phymatous-overlapping features often favor a phenotypic diagnostic approach.

Rationale: Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) is a rare, life-threatening complication of neuroleptic (antipsychotic) medications. Paliperidone is an atypical antipsychotic used in the treatment of schizophrenia. While current evidence suggests that atypical oral antipsychotics have a lower incidence of NMS compared to typical oral antipsychotics, there is limited information available on the incidence and management of NMS associated with long-acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotics.

Background: Four medication types-opioids, benzodiazepines, anticholinergics, and antipsychotics-have been proposed as essential for patients in their final days, regardless of their primary diagnosis. These drugs are typically prescribed for individuals with cancer who are under specialized palliative care (PC+). However, it is not known whether their usage is equally common for patients with other chronic and progressive conditions, such as heart failure (HF), or for those who are not under specialized palliative care (PC-).

Antipsychotic drugs are effective at improving both the positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia as well as the manic phase of bipolar disorder. Whether an antipsychotic is termed typical or atypical is related to the xenobiotic's propensity to cause extrapyramidal side effects. However, with a few exceptions, drugs of both classes of antipsychotics are known to cause hyperprolactinemia.

One of the most well-known medications for treating delusional infestation (DI) is pimozide. Many patients may be reluctant to initiate treatment unless a medication has anti-pathogenic properties, as they feel otherwise it does not address their concerns regarding infestation. In this article, we explore the evidence that pimozide has a range of antipathogenic effects and how this fact can aid in patient care.
