Published: October 2004

Convective amplification in large homogeneous systems is studied, both analytically and numerically, in the case of a linear diffraction-free stochastic amplifier. Overall amplification does not result from successive amplifications in small scale high intensity hot spots, but from a single amplification in a delocalized mode of the driver field spreading over the whole interaction length. For this model, the hot-spot approach is found to systematically underestimate the gain factor by more than 50%.

Microfluidic purification of genomic DNA.

We describe a microfluidic device to extract DNA from a cell lysate, without the need for centrifuges, magnetic beads, or gels. Instead, separation is driven by transverse migration of DNA, which occurs when a polyelectrolyte solution flowing through a microfluidic channel is subjected to an electric field. The coupling of the weak shearing with the axial electric field is highly selective for long, flexible, charged molecules, of which DNA is the sole example in a typical cell lysate.

Isothermal amplification methods have become popular in research due to the simplicity of the technology needed to run the reactions. Specifically, loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) has been widely used for various applications since first reported in 2000. LAMP reactions are commonly monitored with the use of colorimetry.

Department of Life Science, University of Seoul, Seoul, 02504, Republic of Korea.

Rapid, sensitive, inexpensive point-of-care molecular diagnostics are crucial for the efficient control of spreading viral diseases and biosecurity of global health. However, the gold standard, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is time-consuming and expensive and needs specialized testing laboratories. Here, we report a low-cost yet fast, selective, and sensitive Plasmonic Optical Wells-Based Enhanced Rate PCR: POWER-PCR.

Analyzing urban influence on extreme winter precipitation through observations and numerical simulation of two South China case studies.

This study investigates the impact of urbanization on extreme winter rainfall in the South China Greater Bay Area (GBA) through the analysis of hourly station observations and simulations using the Weather Research and Forecasting Model with the Single Layer Urban Canopy Model (WRF-SLUCM). Data from 2008 to 2017 reveal that urban areas in the GBA experience lower 99th percentile hourly winter rainfall intensity compared to surrounding rural regions. However, urban locations exhibit higher annual maximum hourly rainfall (Rmax) and very extreme rainfall events (99.

Early and accurate detection of infectious diseases is a key step for surveillance, epidemiology and control, notably timely disease diagnosis, patient management and follow-up. In this study, we aimed to develop handheld ultra-fast duplex PCR assays coupled to amplicon detection by lateral flow (LF) immunoassay to deliver a rapid and simple molecular diagnostic test for concomitant detection and identification of the main parasites encountered in Tunisia. We selected two DNA targets to amplify / and / groups of species DNAs, respectively.
