Ticks are a significant threat to livestock globally, with certain species displaying distinct host preferences at various developmental stages. Accurate species-level identification is essential for studying tick populations, implementing control strategies, and understanding disease dynamics. This study evaluated ticks infesting cattle across six provinces in South Africa using morphological and molecular methods.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how climatic conditions affect tick populations and tick-borne diseases across various South African regions.
  • A total of 3,409 ticks were collected from communal cattle, with the highest prevalence in KwaZulu-Natal, and revealed that warm temperatures and high humidity favor tick survival.
  • The findings highlight the need for better livestock management practices and further research on the impact of climate change on tick dynamics and disease transmission.

Research has shown that voraxin α derived from male ticks stimulates blood feeding to engorge in female ticks. Whereas, the oviposition rate, egg weight, and body weight of female ticks were reduced in animals vaccinated with recombinant (r-) voraxin α. These data suggest a potential role of r-voraxin α as a functional anti-tick antigen in Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and Amblyomma hebraeum tick infestation.
