Perceptual multistability has often been explained using the concepts of adaptation and hysteresis. In this paper we show that effects that would typically be accounted for by adaptation and hysteresis can be explained without assuming the existence of dedicated mechanisms for adaptation and hysteresis. Instead, our data suggest that perceptual multistability reveals lasting states of the visual system rather than changes in the system caused by stimulation. We presented observers with two successive multistable stimuli and found that the probability that they saw the favored organization in the first stimulus was inversely related to the probability that they saw the same organization in the second. This pattern of negative contingency is orientation-tuned and occurs no matter whether the observer had or had not seen the favored organization in the first stimulus. This adaptation-like effect of negative contingency combines multiplicatively with a hysteresis-like effect that increases the likelihood of the just-perceived organization. Both effects are consistent with a probabilistic model in which perception depends on an orientation-tuned intrinsic bias that slowly (and stochastically) changes its orientation tuning over time.

We provide a technical description and experimental results of the practical development and offline testing of an innovative, closed-loop, adaptive mirror system capable of making rapid, precise and ultra-stable changes in the size and shape of reflected X-ray beams generated at synchrotron light and free-electron laser facilities. The optical surface of a piezoelectric bimorph deformable mirror is continuously monitored at 20 kHz by an array of interferometric sensors. This matrix of height data is autonomously converted into voltage commands that are sent at 1 Hz to the piezo actuators to modify the shape of the mirror optical surface.

However, these complexes tend to be bent, imposing a transverse field that reduces the purity of the projections of the CF states and promotes magnetic relaxation. A complex with only one charge-dense anionic ligand could have more pure CF states, and thus high and .

Atomic force microscope (AFM) is an important nano-scale surface characterization and measurement method. Raster scanning method (RSM), widely used in AFMs, faces limitations on scanning speed and imaging accuracy. In this paper, an isotropic linear scanning method (ILSM) is proposed to improve the AFM imaging performance.

This paper reports a phase transition in coupled three-dimensional limit-cycle oscillators with an adaptive coupling. We reveal that the multiple-cluster rhythmic states emerge when natural frequencies of oscillators follow uniform distribution (case I), but disappear for Gaussian distribution (case II). Furthermore, as the coupling strength K increases, two first-order phase transitions occur sequentially.

This paper presents an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) based on 24 sectors direct torque command (DTC) for a doubly-fed induction machine (DFIM) by using a 3-level neutral point clamped inverter. The DTC approach is used in this paper with 24 sectors based on the ANFIS regulator to minimize the torque fluctuations, flux fluctuations, and stator stream THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) of the DFIM drive. The composed technique is accomplished by replacing the hysteresis controllers of the flux and torque with the ANFIS controller.
