Algorithm for evaluation of crystal figures obtained after drying of mixed saliva.

Bull Exp Biol Med

Department of Pathophysiology, Stomatological Faculty, Moscow State Medical Stomatological Institute.

Published: July 2004

Algorithm of qualitative description of crystallographic aggregations of mixed saliva was developed. The efficiency of this method for the diagnosis of gastrointestinal diseases was demonstrated.

Awakening not associated with an increased rate of cortisol secretion.

Proc Biol Sci

January 2025

Laboratory for Integrative Neuroscience and Endocrinology, University of Bristol, Bristol BS1 3NY, UK.

Cortisol is released upon activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, varies across the day, possesses an underlying diurnal rhythm and is responsive to stressors. The endogenous circadian peak of cortisol occurs in the morning, and increases in cortisol observed post-awakening have been named the cortisol awakening response (CAR) based on the belief that the act of waking up stimulates cortisol secretion. However, objective evidence that awakening induces cortisol secretion is limited.

Objective: To evaluate the influence of different cleaning methods, surface treatments, and aging on the repair bond strength to a CAD/CAM glass-ceramic.

Materials And Methods: Forty-eight lithium disilicate CAD/CAM ceramic blocks were fabricated, sintered, and embedded in acrylic resin. After contamination with human saliva, they were divided according to the factors "Cleaning method" (Control-water/air spray, Air-particle abrasion with AlO, Ivoclean cleaning paste), "Surface treatment" (5% Hydrofluoric acid-HF + Silane, Monobond Etch & Prime-MEP), and "Aging" (thermocycling, no thermocycling).

Objectives: Head and neck malignancies (HNMs) encompass a variety of cancers that affect the oral and para-oral tissues, the most common of which are squamous cell carcinomas. Radiotherapy is commonly used to treat these cancers, often involving radiation exposure to the salivary glands. This study aims to investigate the early impacts of radiotherapy on the internal microstructure of the salivary gland cells and identify which gland exhibits the highest level of radiosensitivity.

Background/objective: Raloxifene, a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM), may improve symptoms and cognition in schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD). Studies have shown inconsistent efficacy, especially in men with SSD. We assessed whether single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on genes involved in the pharmacodynamics (ESR1 and COMT) and pharmacokinetics (UGT1A8) of raloxifene can explain the heterogeneous treatment response to raloxifene augmentation in patients with SSD.

Adverse early-life experiences alter the regulation of major stress systems such as the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Low early-life maternal care (MC) has repeatedly been related to blunted cortisol stress responses. Likewise, an acutely increased awareness of mortality (mortality salience [MS]) also has been shown to blunt cortisol responses.
