Long-chain quinones are essential components of both bacterial and eukaryotic respiratory chains, and some of the main unsolved questions on energy transduction in membranes are complicated by the lack of consistent information on the physical state of the quinones in membrane bilayers. We have recorded, at various temperatures and under different conditions, the infrared spectra of ubiquinone-10 (the main species in mitochondria) and several analogues. The C = O stretching vibration band located at 1663-1670 cm-1 has been identified as the most sensitive one to phase and environmental changes. Three distinct phases have been characterized in which pure ubiquinone-10 may exist: crystalline (LC1), isotropic liquid (IL) and liquid crystalline (Lc). The only allowed thermotropic transitions are LC1----IL, IL----Lc and Lc----LC1. Our investigations with pure quinones provide a simpler and more detailed description of their phase changes than any of the previous studies and shed light on their behaviour in membranes. When incorporated into phospholipid bilayers, ubiquinone-10 appears to be removed from the aqueous environment and is found to exist, in the 4-70 degrees C range, in an isotropic liquid phase, in the form of small aggregates.

Mechanical properties of engineered connective tissues are critical for their success, yet modern sensors that measure physical qualities of tissues for quality control are invasive and destructive. The goal of this work was to develop a noncontact, nondestructive method to measure mechanical attributes of engineered skin substitutes during production without disturbing the sterile culture packaging. We optimized a digital holographic vibrometry (DHV) system to measure the mechanical behavior of Apligraf living cellular skin substitute through the clear packaging in multiple conditions: resting on solid agar as when the tissue is shipped, on liquid media in which it is grown, and freely suspended in air as occurs when the media is removed for feeding.

Purpose Of Review: To review the most current recommendations regarding assessment and treatment of asymptomatic hypertension treatment in the emergency department (ED) and to provide guidance for prescribing oral antihypertensive therapy for ED providers.
Recent Findings: There are varying management strategies for the treatment of asymptomatic hypertension in the ED likely due to a lack of direct guidelines for treatment. There is an increasing body of evidence for the safety of initiating therapy to treat chronic asymptomatic hypertension in the ED.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of autolyzed yeast (obtained from culture of Saccharomyces cerevisiae in sugarcane derivatives) supplementation on diet digestibility, feeding behavior, levels of blood metabolites associated with protein and energy metabolism, and performance of Dorper × Santa Ines lambs finished in feedlot. Twenty-four non-castrated male lambs with an average age of 4 months and a body weight (BW) of 19.49 ± 3.

Land-based inputs, such as runoff, rivers, and submarine groundwater, can alter biologic processes on coral reefs. While the abiotic factors associated with land-based inputs have strong effects on corals, corals are also affected by biotic interactions, including other neighboring corals. The biologic responses of corals to changing environmental conditions and their neighbors are likely interactive; however, few studies address both biotic and abiotic interactions in concert.

Purpose Of The Study: Rhizarthrosis-osteoarthritis of the thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) joint is usually a primary idiopathic disease. Total joint arthroplasty (TJA) is one of the surgical treatment options for symptomatic advanced thumb CMC arthritis. This retrospective study aims to evaluate the mid-term functional and radiological results of TJA with the minimum follow-up period of 3 years after the surgery.
