Objective: To investigate the effect of imagining a fixed spatial reference on balance control.

Material And Methods: Twenty-one healthy subjects were asked to remain as stable as possible while standing on a sway-referenced platform (NeuroCom Equitest posturography system). Subjects were instructed to keep their eyes open in the dark and to either look far into the distance without fixating on any particular point in space or to direct their gaze towards a remembered earth-fixed target (25-cm distant). Room lights were switched off immediately before each 20-s sway recording. Postural stability measures included equilibrium scores and root-mean-square sway amplitudes in the anterior-posterior plane.

Results: Postural sway was not influenced by the instruction to gaze towards a remembered target.

Conclusion: Imagining a fixed spatial reference does not influence postural control, at least during sway-referenced dynamic posturography.

We explain the steering of slow degrees of freedom by coupling them to driven components for which the time-symmetric reactivities are manipulated. We present the strategy and main principle that make that sort of navigation feasible. For illustration, nonlinear limit cycles (as in the van der Pol oscillator) and strange attractors (as in the Lorenz dynamics) are seen to emerge when the driving in the nonequilibrium medium is kept fixed while the frenesy is tuned to produce the required forces.

According to classical phenomenology, phenomenal experience is composed of perceptions (related to environmental stimuli) and imagery/ideas (unrelated to environmental stimuli). Intensity/vividness is supposed to represent the key phenomenal difference between perceptions and ideas, higher in perceptions than ideas, and thus the core subjective criterion to distinguish reality from imagination. At a neural level, phenomenal experience is related to brain activity in the sensory areas, driven by receptor stimulation (underlying perception) or associative areas (underlying imagery/ideas).
