Background: Rapid kilovolt (kV)-switching dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) has been increasingly applied to the measurement of lumbar spine bone mineral density (BMD) in humans and animal models. The objective of this study was to investigate the optimal parameters for the measurement of vertebral BMD. The BMD of the spinal model was measured by means of DECT in combination with different noise index (NI) and preset adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction Veo (ASiR-V) levels.

Investigating the preventive effects of pulsed electromagnetic fields on glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis in rats.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Department of Spine and Spinal Cord Surgery, Henan Provincial People's Hospital, People's Hospital of Zhengzhou University, People's Hospital of Henan University, No. 7 Weiwu Road, Jinshui District, Zhengzhou, 450003, Henan, China.

The use of pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) has demonstrated effectiveness in the management of femoral head osteonecrosis as well as nonunion fractures; however, the effects of PEMF on preventing glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (GIOP) have not been extensively studied. The aim of this investigation was to explore the effectiveness of PEMF stimulation in averting GIOP in rats and uncover the potential fundamental mechanisms involved. A total of seventy-two adult male Wistar rats composed the experimental group and were subsequently assigned to three groups for treatment.

Heavy resistance training provides short-term benefits on bone formation in well-functioning older adults.

Institute of Sports Medicine Copenhagen (ISMC), Department of Orthopedic Surgery M81, Copenhagen University Hospital - Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg Hospital, University of Copenhagen, Denmark; Department of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark; Department of Neurology, Copenhagen University Hospital - Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg, Denmark; Center for Healthy Aging, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Denmark.

Objectives: Maintained bone health is critical for independent living when aging. Currently, multimodal exercise regimes including weight-bearing exercises with impact are prescribed as optimal for maintaining bone health, while there is less consensus on the effects of resistance training at different intensities upon bone. Here we examined whether bone health was positively influenced by 1 year of supervised resistance training at two different intensities.

Vertebral fractures are a common and debilitating consequence of osteoporosis. Bone mineral density (BMD), measured by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), is the clinical standard for assessing overall bone quantity but falls short in accurately predicting vertebral fracture. Fracture risk prediction may be improved by incorporating metrics of microstructural organization from an appropriate imaging modality.

Mo and Sn exposure associated with the increased of bone mineral density.

Biometals

January 2025

School of Environment and Climate, Guangdong Key Laboratory of Environmental Pollution and Health, Jinan University, Guangzhou, 510632, China.

Bone mineral density (BMD) measured by T-score is strongly associated with bone health, but research on its association with metals in humans body remains limited. To investigate the relationship between metal exposure and BMD, numbers of 159 participants in eastern China were studied. Urine and blood samples were collected and levels of 20 metals in the samples were measured using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS).
