Published: November 2004

Background: Gambro BCT recently introduced the Trima Accel Version 5 (TR) plateletpheresis machine. Platelet (PLT) yields, collection efficiencies (CEs), numbers of white blood cells (WBCs), and processing times of the TR versus the Amicus (Version 2.51) single-needle (AM) procedures were evaluated by use of a prospective paired comparison.

Study Design And Methods: Target yields of 3.0 x 10(11) to 6.8 x 10(11) PLTs in up to 100 minutes of processing time were used. To detect a difference of 1.0 x 10(11) PLTs with a power of 80 percent, 26 paired comparisons were needed.

Results: The mean amount of whole blood processed was significantly higher for TR than for AM (3795 vs. 3520 mL). The TR and AM were equivalent in regard to mean preprocedure PLT count (259 x 10(9) vs. 251 x 10(9)/L), PLT yields (6.7 x 10(11) vs. 6.5 x 10(11)), split rate (65% vs. 65%), processing time (73 vs. 78 min), and collection rate (0.090 x 10(11) vs. 0.084 x 10(11) PLTs/min). The TR had a significantly lower CE than the AM (76% vs. 86%). All of the products (after splitting) had fewer than 5 x 10(6) WBCs.

Conclusions: The Trima Accel machine processed significantly more whole blood with equivalent PLT yields, processing time, and number of PLTs per minute compared to the Amicus single-needle procedure, but had a significantly lower CE.

Background: Platelets collected by the Trima Accel apheresis device (Terumo BCT) are automatically leukoreduced through a leukoreduction system (LRS) where WBCs are trapped in a conical-shaped LRS chamber. The content has been used as a valuable source of mononuclear cells for research purposes. In frequent, long-term platelet apheresis donors, lymphopenia has been associated with the use of LRS chambers, and implementation of plasma rinseback at the end of the procedure has been shown to mitigate the depletion of lymphocytes.

Objectives: Plateletpheresis (PP) has become increasingly prevalent due to its cost-effectiveness and fewer immunological and infectious complications for recipients. This study compares hematological indices of platelet donors and instrument-related parameters in high-yield PP donors using Haemonetics MCS+ and Trima Accel.

Methods: Eligible and healthy PP donors meeting the platelet donation criteria were randomly selected.

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is increasingly used in various fields of medicine, aiming to regeneration and repair damaged tissues, cells and organs. High concentration of bioactive molecules including growth factors, cytokines and chemokines are the rationale of using PRP. The aim of this study is to analyze the effect of frozen on the levels of growth factors.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the causes of platelet aggregation in a blood collection system and tests two interventions aimed at reducing this issue.
  • In 2021, a group of 72 donors experiencing platelet aggregation were divided into two intervention groups: one increased the anticoagulant ratio, while the other kept donors warm with an electric blanket to enhance blood flow.
  • Results showed that the warm treatment led to faster blood flow and decreased collection time and machine alarms, but there was no significant difference in the overall deaggregation of platelets between the two groups.

Background: Platelet concentrates (PCs) could be prepared using either whole-blood processes or apheresis instruments. During collection, processing and storage, some biochemical and functional changes occur, which may result in quality reduction. Quality evaluation of PCs may be helpful for the precise control of platelet (PLT) inventory to reduce the risk of refractoriness and adverse effects caused by platelet transfusion.
