Swallowing, both nutritive and non-nutritive, is highly dysfunctional in children with Leigh Syndrome (LS) and contributes to the need for both gastrostomy and tracheostomy tube placement. Without these interventions aspiration of food, liquid, and mucus occur resulting in repeated bouts of respiratory infection. No study has investigated whether mouse models of LS, a neurometabolic disorder, exhibit dysfunctions in neuromuscular activity of swallow and breathing integration.

Tracheal defects, particularly those extending over long segments, present substantial challenges in reconstructive surgery due to complications in vascularization and integration with host tissues. Traditional methods, such as extended tracheostomies and alloplastic stents, often result in significant morbidity due to mucus plugging and mechanical erosion. Recent advances in vascularized composite allograft (VCA) transplantation have opened new avenues for effective tracheal reconstruction.

Introduction: With its introduction in 1986, the use of metal tracheal stents gained favor due to relative ease of deployment and reduced risk of stent migration and mucus plugging. However, adverse events associated with metal stenting led the FDA to publish a recommendation against its use for benign airway stenosis in 2005. We present a case which illustrates the difficulty in removal of a metal stent from the airway.
