Removal of the pesticides bentazon and propanil from single and bisolute solutions by adsorption at the high area activated carbon-cloth was investigated. Kinetics of adsorption was followed and adsorption isotherms of the two pesticides were determined. A special V-shaped cell with an UV cuvette attached to it was used for adsorption studies. With this cell it was possible to follow the concentration of pesticide molecule by in situ UV spectroscopy as it is adsorbed at the carbon-cloth. It was found that concentration of pesticides decreased from the same initial concentration of 4.5 x 10(-5) to 1.1 x 10(-5) for bentazon and to 9.5 x 10(-6) for propanil in about 2 h. The fits of experimental adsorption isotherm data to Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm equations were almost equally successful. Monolayer capacities determined from Langmuir isotherms of pesticides showed that bentazon has greater monolayer capacity than propanil. This conclusion was also confirmed through the 1/n parameter of Freundlich equation.

This work assesses the capacity of a microalgae-based system to remove three highly to medium polar pesticides typically found in freshwater: acetamiprid, bentazone, and propanil. Degradation of the pesticides was firstly studied individually at batch lab-scale reactors and abiotic and heated-killed controls were employed to clarify their removal pathways. At lab-scale, propanil and acetamiprid were completely removed after 7 days whereas bentazone was not removed.

Delta ecosystems are areas of high ecologic and economic values, where wildlife commonly shares the territory with intensive agricultural activities, particularly, rice cultivation and seafood production. This work aimed at evaluating the occurrence of a wide spectrum of pesticides and transformation products in the water of irrigation and drainage channels of the Ebro River Delta (NE Spain) during the main rice-growing season, when pesticide application is at its peak. Furthermore, the impact that these contaminants may have on local ecosystems and seafood production activities was assessed.

Pesticide usage in Delta del Ebro (NE Spain) during the rice growing season has been associated with oyster episodes of mortality that occur early in summer. However, there are no studies that have directly evaluated pesticide levels and effects in oysters (Crassotrea gigas) cultured in Ebro's Bays. In this study pesticide levels in water, metal body burdens and up to 12 different biochemical markers were monitored in gills and digestive glands of oysters transplanted from May to June in 2008 and 2009.
