Objectives: Hearing loss is associated with increased cognitive decline and incident dementia in older adults. Given the rapidly rising incidence of dementia, management of modifiable risk factors such as hearing loss, is essential to mitigate the impact on the individual and society in general. In this narrative review, we discuss the current state-of-art with respect to studying cognitive function before and after cochlear implantation in the elderly population.

In the last thirty years, tissue engineering (TI) has emerged as an alternative method to regenerate tissues and organs and restore their function by implanting specific lineage cells, growth factors, or biomolecules functionalizing a matrix scaffold. Recently, several pathologies have led to bone loss or damage, such as malformations, bone resorption associated with benign or malignant tumors, periodontal disease, traumas, and others in which a discontinuity in tissue integrity is observed. Bone tissue is characterized by different stiffness, mechanical traction, and compression resistance as a function of the different compartments, which can influence susceptibility to injury or destruction.

Knee arthritis is a common degenerative joint disease, usually with joint swelling, chronic pain, and dysfunction as the main clinical manifestations. At present, the conservative treatment for knee arthritis is mostly using anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs, but the effect is mostly temporary, and can not prevent its progress and surgery is usually the last treatment method. Total knee arthroplasty, also known as TKA, is one of the most effective treatments for osteoarthritis of the knee that has progressed to the end stage.

Hydrogel-based bioelectronic systems offer significant benefits for point-of-care diagnosis, treatment of cardiac and cerebral disease, surgical procedures, and other medical applications, ushering in a new era of advancements in medical technology. Progress in hydrogel-based bioelectronics has advanced from basic instrument and sensing capabilities to sophisticated multimodal perceptions and feedback systems. Addressing challenges related to immune responses and inflammation regulation after implantation, physiological dynamic mechanism, biological toxicology as well as device size, power consumption, stability, and signal conversion is crucial for the practical implementation of hydrogel-based bioelectronics in medical implants.
