Pyrrolyl and indolyl substituted allenylidene complexes of ruthenium have been prepared from the trapping of cationic trans-[Cl(dppm)(2)Ru=C=C=C=CH(2)](+) with various pyrroles or N-methylindole. The reaction is rationalized as involving regioselective attack of the organometallic electrophile on the electron-rich heterocycle followed by proton migration to the terminal =CH(2) entity of the intermediate butenynyl substituted sigma-complex. Pyrrolyl substituted allenylidene complexes have spectroscopic and electrochemical properties intermediate between those of amino and aryl substituted congeners and can thus be regarded as vinylogous aminoallenylidene complexes. We present spectroscopic evidence that the pyrrole pi-system is efficiently incorporated into the metallabutatriene chromophore including resonance Raman spectroscopy. According to our results, the respective frontier orbitals are delocalized across the entire ClRuC(3)(pyrrolyl) entity which defies any classification of the individual redox events as metal or ligand centered redox processes. This issue has been specifically addressed by spectroelectrochemistry. The structure of the 1-methylindole-3-yl complex has been determined by X-ray crystallography. Bond parameters along the ruthenium-allenylidene chain are intermediate between those of amino and aryl substituted congeners and support our conclusions drawn from the spectroscopic results. While still electron rich, pyrrolyl substituted allenylidene complexes are easily deprotonated to their conjugate bases, which are substituted butenynyl complexes. This has been exemplified with the tetrahydroindole derived complex 3f.

The catalytic (asymmetric) allylation and propargylation have been established as powerful strategies allowing access to enantioenriched α-chiral alkenes and alkynes. In this context, combining allylic and propargylic substitutions offers new opportunities to expand the scope of transition metal-catalyzed substitution reactions. Since its discovery in 2022, copper-catalyzed yne-allylic substitution has undergone rapid development and significant progress has been made using the key copper vinyl allenylidene intermediates.

Gold allenylidene species have been seldom exploited as reactive intermediates in synthetically versatile catalytic reactions. By employing alkynylbenziodoxoles as the substrates and bifunctional WangPhos as the metal ligand, this work demonstrated ready catalytic access to these intermediates of general substitution patterns and their electrophilic reactivities at the γ-carbon center with a diverse range of nucleophiles. The reaction is driven by the reductive decomposition of the benziodoxole moiety and achieves the replacement of a propargylic proton with an N/O/C-based nucleophile, hence realizing reactivity umpolung.

The formation of vicinal all-carbon quaternary stereocenters remains a formidable challenge. We report herein the synthesis of such highly congested structural dyads by copper-catalyzed decarboxylative propargylation between propargyl carbonates and indanone-based nucleophiles. The implementation of diphenylethylenediamine (DPEN)-based ligands is the key to success.

A family of Pt(II) complexes bearing monoanionic C^N^N ligands as luminophoric units as well as a set of monodentate ligands derived from allenylidene and carbene species were synthesized and characterized in terms of structure and photophysical properties. In addition, we present the extraordinary molecular structure of a phosphorescent complex carrying an allenylidene ligand. Depending on the co-ligand, an effect can be observed in the photoluminescence lifetimes and quantum yields as well as in the radiative and radiation less deactivation rate constants.

Controlling the sequence of the three consecutive reactive carbon centres of Cu-allenylidene remains a challenge. One of the impressive achievements in this area is the Cu-catalyzed annulation of 4-ethynyl benzoxazinanones, which are transformed into zwitterionic Cu-stabilized allenylidenes that are trapped by interceptors to provide the annulation products. In principle, the reaction proceeds via a preferential γ-attack, while annulation reactions via an α- or β-attack are infrequent.
