Blastocystis is a ubiquitous gastrointestinal protozoan parasite found both in humans and animals. The purpose of this review is to look at the prevalence and genetic diversity of Blastocystis in farm animals, including cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and poultry, and discuss the potential evidence of transmission between animals and humans, as well as highlight the related risk factors and public health significance. Significant differences have been found in the prevalence of Blastocystis in different hosts worldwide.

Background: Human intestinal parasitosis and microsporidiosis are a global health concern, mostly in endemic areas but should not be neglected elsewhere. Recent nationwide epidemiological data are scarce, especially from primary health care and developed countries. Introduction: Intestinal microeukaryote parasites are major contributors to the burden of diarrhoea in humans and domestic animals, but their epidemiology in wildlife is not fully understood. We investigated the frequency, genetic diversity and zoonotic potential of protists of animal and public health significance in free-ranging grey wolf (Canis lupus) populations in south-western Europe.

Methods: Individually formed faecal samples collected from necropsied wolves or scat trails in Italy (n = 47), Portugal (n = 43) and Spain (n = 225) during the period 2011-2023 were retrospectively analysed using molecular (PCR and Sanger sequencing) methods.

  • Out of 36,008 children tested, 32.5% had DF and 7.9% had Bs, but these infections didn't lead to significantly more health issues compared to those with negative results, except for some abdominal pain in DF-positive cases.
  • The findings suggest that while DF and Bs are common in children's stool, they likely have limited clinical importance, especially when compared to known pathogenic microorganisms.
