A highly efficient, diode-pumped, Nd:YAG laser is described. The oscillator utilizes an unstable resonator design with a Gaussian reflectivity output coupler and a side-pumped zigzag slab gain medium. The laser produces 18-mJ, 10-ns pulses at a repetition rate of 242 Hz in a near-TEM00 mode with an optical efficiency of up to 14%. An extended performance test was recently concluded in which the transmitter operated at reduced output for more than 4.8 x 10(9) shots with no optical damage. Design criteria, beam quality, and lifetime data are presented.

We describe a two-beam thermal lens spectrophotometer that uses a xenon lamp as the excitation source and a low power diode pumped Nd-YAG laser as the probe light. The white light from the xenon source is filtered using a variable interference filter producing a partial monochromatic light within the spectral range 400-700 nm and with a spectral resolution of 10 nm. We measure the thermal lens spectrum of a nonfluorescent dye (Malachite Green) and show that this spectrum reproduces its absorbance spectra measured by the usual transmission method.

This paper describes a direct write laser technology, which is fast and flexible, for fabricating multiple-level microfluidic channels. A high brightness diode-pumped Nd-YAG laser with slab geometry was used for its excellent beam quality. Channels with flat walls and staggered herringbone ridges on the floor have been successfully fabricated and their ability to perform passive mixing of liquid is discussed.

We report the realisation of a laser spectrometer in the mid-infrared spectral region based on difference-frequency generation in a periodically poled LiNbO3 crystal. Tunable coherent radiation around 3 microm was produced by mixing a diode-pumped monolithic cw Nd-YAG laser and an injection-locked diode laser at 0.785 microm.
