In this issue of Cancer Cell, Son et al. highlight an unexpected role for skin β-papillomaviruses in the protection against skin carcinogenesis. T cell immunity to skin papillomaviruses blocks the expansion of p53 mutant clones in ultraviolet (UV) radiation-damaged skin, preventing the development of skin cancer.

The multistep process by which phagocytes engulf these deceased cells without eliciting an inflammatory response is called efferocytosis. Serum and glucocorticoid-regulated kinase 1 (SGK1), a member of the AGC family of serine/threonine protein kinases, is one of the most conserved protein kinases in eukaryotic evolution. SGK1 is expressed to varying degrees in various types of cells throughout the body, and plays an important role in hypertension, ion channels, oxidative stress, neurological disorders, and cardiovascular regulation. In recent years, a number of scholars have devoted themselves to the study of the role and function of SGK1 in neurological diseases.
