Objective: The prosthesis/eardrum interface is often deliberately modified by cartilage overlay, or by soft tissue in-growth. We examined the effects of vibration transmission to the footplate of inserting cartilage of varying sizes, and materials of varying rigidities.

Study Design And Setting: Using fresh human cadaveric temporal bones, stapes vibrations were measured. A partial ossicular reconstruction prosthesis was covered with differing materials and cartilage sizes. Materials used included glass (rigid), cartilage (intermediate), and Merocel (soft). Cartilage sizes varied in size relative to the prosthesis head.

Results: Rigidity of material had little impact. Cartilage size had an impact, with smaller cartilage covers performing best.

Conclusion: Larger cartilage sizes performed worse. This could be a result of increased tension on the eardrum from larger cartilage size. There is little impact stiffness of interposed material stiffness.

Significance: Cartilage of the size used clinically has little impact on vibration transmission to the footplate. A wide range of materials could clinically be interposed over the prosthesis.

Raman Signature of Stripe Domains in Monolayer WMoS Alloys.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

We study the Raman signature of stripe domains in monolayer WMoS alloys, characterized using experimental techniques and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. These stripe domains were found in star-shaped monolayer WS exhibiting a high concentration of molybdenum (Mo) atoms in its central region, and unique Raman peaks that were not previously reported. We attribute these peaks to the splitting of the original doubly degenerate E modes, arising from the lower symmetry of the W-Mo stripe domains.

In this study, the AlFeO@n-Pr@Et-SOH heterogeneous catalyst was successfully synthesized and utilized to produce biodiesel from oleic acid through an esterification process and to oxidize sulfides. To examine the physicochemical characteristics of the AlFeO@n-Pr@Et-SOH nanomaterial, a variety of advanced techniques were employed, including Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), Elemental Mapping, Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Inductively coupled plasma (ICP), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The AlFeO@n-Pr@Et-SOH materials demonstrated excellent performance in both the esterification of oleic acid and the oxidation of sulfides.

Removal of accumulated dyes from the environment water bodies is essential to prevent further harm to humans. The development and design of new alternative nanoadsorbents that can conveniently, quickly, and efficiently improve the adsorption and removal efficiency of dyes from wastewater remains a huge challenge. An amorphous TiO with a magnetic core-shell-shell structure (FeO@PDA@a-TiO, denoted as FPaT) was constructed through a series of steps.

Contamination of water resources by artificial coloring agents and the increasing incidence of bacterial illnesses are two significant environmental and public health issues that are getting worse day by day. Traditional treatment techniques frequently fail to address these problems adequately in a sustainable and environmental friendly way. In response, our study presents a novel photocatalyst that demonstrates superior photodegradation capability and antibacterial qualities in catering the above issues.

Tungsten oxide (WO) electrochromic devices are obtaining increasing interest due to their color change and thermal regulation. However, most previous work focuses on the absorption or transmission spectra of materials, rather than the optical parameters evolution in full spectrum in the electrochromic processes. Herein, we developed a systematic protocol of ex situ methods to clarify the evolutions of subtle structure changes, Raman vibration modes, and optical parameters of WO thin films in electrochromic processes as stimulated by dosage-dependent Li insertion.
