Article Abstract

A conventional new route to the novel oxazolidin-2-one derivatives (3a-f) having two substituents on N-3 and C-4 in the oxazolidin-2-one ring was established with racemic beta-aminoalanine derivatives (1) as the key starting materials.

Characterisation and anaerobic digestion of fat, oil and grease (FOG) waste from wastewater treatment plants.

J Environ Manage

The materials removed in the oil separation units of wastewater treatment plants can be referred to as fat, oil and grease (FOG) waste. FOG waste accumulation in treatment plants can cause clogging of pipes, production of excessive scums and foams, and negatively affect air/liquid oxygen transfer. While conventional disposal routes of this material can be limited by its water and organic content, FOG can represent a source of bio-energy other than bio-diesel production.

Purpose: Carotid-cavernous fistulas (CCFs) are abnormal connections between the carotid artery and cavernous sinus, often causing ocular symptoms like chemosis, proptosis, and diplopia. Endovascular embolization is the preferred treatment, typically performed via the transfemoral transvenous route through the inferior petrosal sinus (IPS). However, we present a case and a systematic review of indirect CCF treated through deep orbital puncture of the superior ophthalmic vein (SOV) for embolization.

Interpenetrating Composites: A Nomenclature Dilemma.

Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Tallinn University of Technology, Ehitajate Tee 5, 19086 Tallinn, Estonia.

Interpenetrating phase composites are a novel class of heterogeneous structures that have recently gained attention. In these types of composites, one of the phases is topologically continuous and can maintain its structural integrity even if the other phase is removed. These composites are generally fabricated by casting, where the reinforcement penetrates into the precursor matrix as a continuous phase.

Intraocular malignant tumors are rare; however, they can cause serious life-threatening complications. Uveal melanoma (UM) and retinoblastoma (RB) are the most common intraocular tumors in adults and children, respectively, and come with a great disease burden. For many years, several different treatment modalities for UM and RB have been proposed, with chemotherapy for RB cases and plaque radiation therapy for localized UM as first-line treatment options.

Electrosynthesis of ethylene glycol from biomass glycerol.

Nat Commun

January 2025

Key Laboratory for Green Chemical Technology of Ministry of Education, Collaborative Innovation Centre of Chemical Science and Engineering, School of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Tianjin University, Tianjin, China.

Ethylene glycol, a widely used chemical, has a large global capacity exceeding 40 million tons per year. Nevertheless, its production is heavily reliant on fossil fuels, resulting in substantial CO emissions. Herein, we report an approach for electrochemically producing ethylene glycol from biomass glycerol.
