The eutH gene is part of an operon that allows Salmonella enterica to use ethanolamine as a sole source of nitrogen, carbon, and energy. Although the sequence of EutH suggests a role in transport, eutH mutants use ethanolamine normally under standard conditions (pH 7.0). These mutants fail to use ethanolamine at a low pH. Evidence is presented that protonated ethanolamine (Eth0) does not enter cells, while uncharged ethanolamine (Eth0) diffuses freely across the membrane. The external concentration of Eth0 varies with the pH (pK=9.5). At pH 7.0, the standard ethanolamine concentration (41 mM) provides enough Eth0 for an influx rate that can support growth with or without EutH. When a lowered pH and/or ethanolamine concentration reduced the Eth0 concentration below 25 microM, EutH was needed to facilitate diffusion. EutH+ cells grew normally at Eth0 concentrations above 3 microM, close to the Km (9 microM) of the first degradative enzyme, ethanolamine ammonia lyase. It is suggested that EutH facilitates diffusion of Eth0. As predicted for a transporter, EutH contributed to the toxicity of ethanolamine seen under some conditions; furthermore, fusion of EutH to fluorescent Yfp protein provided evidence that EutH is a membrane protein.

Background: Some studies suggest a mood-congruent attentional bias in bipolar patients. However, for euthymic patients, especially in dependence on the predominant polarity, there is little and inconsistent data. A clearer understanding of emotion-related attentional biases and their relationship to dysfunctional emotion regulation could help improving the diagnostics and treatment of bipolar disorder (BD).

Background And Aim: The relationship between subclinical hypothyroidism (SHYPO) and sleep quality is still unclear. Our objective was to compare the sleep quality between SHYPO patients and a control group with normal thyroid function.
Methods: A total of 2224 patients with SHYPO and 12,622 euthyroid (EUTH) control group patients were included in the present study.

We synthesized hydroxyapatite nanocrystals under the existence of tris(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionato)europium(III) (EuTH) complex to form inorganic/organic hybrid nanocrystal (EHA). Then, the folic acid derivative (folate N-hydroxysuccinimidyl ester (FA-NHS)) as the targeting ligand for the HeLa cancer cells was immobilized on the EHA by the mediation of both 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane and methyltriethoxysilane molecules. Here, we investigated the photofunctions based on the interfacial interactions between the FA-NHS and EHA nanohybrids for preparing the novel bioimaging nanomaterials.

Ethanolamine is a ubiquitous and essential molecule within a host. Significantly, bacterial pathogens exploit ethanolamine during infection to promote growth and regulate virulence. The ethanolamine permease EutH is dispensable for growth under standard conditions, whereas EutH is required for ethanolamine utilization at low pH.

Background: Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) has been found to coexist with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) in surgical specimens, but an association between the two conditions has been discounted by the medical literature. Therefore, we performed this study to determine any potential relationship between HT and the risk of developing DTC.
Methods: We collected data for thyrotropin (TSH), thyroxine (T4), thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPO-Ab) titers, surgical pathology, and weight-based levothyroxine (LT4) replacement dose for patients who were referred for thyroid surgery.
