Spectroscopic and electrochemical characterizations of ferrocene- and biferrocene-functionalized terpyridine octanethiolate monolayer-protected clusters were investigated and reported. The electrochemical measurements of Ru2+ coordinated with 4'-ferrocenyl-2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine and 4'-biferrocenyl-2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine complexes were dominated by the Ru2+/Ru3+ redox couple (E(1/2) at approximately 1.3 V), Fe(2+)/Fe(3+) redox couples (E(1/2) from approximately 0.6 to approximately 0.9 V), and terpy/terpy-/terpy2- redox couples (E(1/)(2) at ca. -1.2 and ca. -1.4 V). The substantial appreciable variations detected in the Ru2+/Ru3+ and Fe2+/Fe3+ oxidation potentials indicate that there is an interaction between the Ru2+ and Fe2+ metal centers. The coordination of the Ru2+ metal center with 4'-ferrocenyl-2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine and 4'-biferrocenyl-2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine leads to an intense 1[(d(pi)Fe)6] --> 1[d(pi)Fe)5(pi*terpyRu)1] transition in the visible region. The 1[(d(pi)Fe)6] -->1[d(pi)Fe)5(pi*terpyRu)1] transition observed at approximately 510 nm revealed that there was a qualitative electronic coupling between metal centers. The coordination of the Ru2+ transition metal center lowers the energy of the pi*terpy orbitals, causing this transition.

Predictive approaches and rules to connect and combine molecular circuit components are required to realize the potential of molecular electronics and develop miniaturized integrated circuits. To this end, we have recently demonstrated a bis(terpyridine)-based molecular breadboard with four conductance states formed by the superposition of five 2-5 ring circuits. Here, we develop a generic analytical/statistical model to describe break-junction data and use it to extract the conductance of the five embedded circuits in the bis-terpyridine-based molecular breadboard junction.

Molecular materials that exhibit synergistic coupling between luminescence and spin-crossover (SCO) behaviors hold significant promise for applications in molecular sensors and memory devices. However, the rational design and underlying coupling mechanisms remain substantial challenges in this field. In this study, we utilized a luminescent complementary ligand pair as an intramolecular luminophore to construct a new Fe-based SCO complex, namely [FeLL](BF)·HO (1-Fe, L is a 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine (TPY) derivative ligand and L is 2,6-di-1-pyrazol-1-yl-4-pyridinecarboxylic acid), and two isomorphic analogs (2-Co, [CoLL](BF)·HO and 3-Zn, [ZnLL](BF)·HO).

The nucleotides play multiple fundamental roles that are essential in biochemical enzymatic reactions and signaling pathways. Many diseases are closely associated with their dysregulation. Therefore, reliable and sensitive optical probes to discriminate various nucleotides are essential in biochemistry, drug discovery, and disease diagnosis.

Inhibitors of the PD-1/PD-L1 immune checkpoint have revolutionized cancer treatment. However, the clinical response remains limited, with only 20% of patients benefiting from treatment and approximately 60% of PD-L1-positive patients exhibiting resistance. One key factor contributing to resistance is the externalization of phosphatidylserine (PS) on the surface of cancer cells, which suppresses immune responses and promotes PD-L1 expression, further hindering the efficacy of PD-L1 blockade therapies.

Stimulus-responsive luminescent materials are pivotal in the field of sensing. Fluorescent transition metal complexes with a charge transfer excited state, especially terpyridine-coordinated polymers, are of particular interest due to their tunable emission. In this paper, a novel bis-terpyridine ligand was synthesized and assembled into a coordination polymer, which showed intense visible light absorption and fluorescence emission in the solid state that could be regulated by an acidic or basic pH.
