Nearest-neighbor recognition experiments, which have been carried out using exchangeable dimers derived from 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine, 1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine,and 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycerophosphoethanolamine, indicate that replacement of H2O by D2O can significantly influence phospholipid mixing, but only in bilayers that are saturated and devoid of cholesterol. These findings, together with those of previous electron spin resonance spin-labeling studies, indicate that mammalian membranes, which are rich in cholesterol and unsaturated phospholipids, are ideal hydrophobic barriers.

Previous results have been mixed as to whether the emulsifying agent lecithin increases carotenoid bioaccessibility and Caco-2 cellular uptake. The dose-response effect of lecithin (0-5 mg) on carotenoid bioaccessibility and Caco-2 cellular uptake was investigated in vitro using a mixture of β-carotene, lycopene, lutein, zeaxanthin and astaxanthin. Resulting micelles were incubated with Caco-2 cells for 4 h.

Mixtures of two phospholipids (PLs) with different main phase transition temperatures were investigated. Host PLs (HPLs) were represented by DMPC, DPPC, DSPC, and DMPE. The admixed PL was the spin-labeled phosphatidylcholine 5-PC(1-palmitoyl-2-(5-doxylstearoyl)phosphatidylcholine), with a unique opportunity to monitor the properties and the local environments of all admixed PL molecules using saturation recovery EPR methods.

Amphotericin B (AmB) causes toxicity to the erythrocyte membrane, leading to hemolysis, which limits the clinically effective dose for AmB intravenous therapy in invasive fungal infections. The molecular mechanism by which AmB adheres to the membrane of erythrocytes is the key factor in causing AmB to be toxic to the membrane of erythrocytes, but it is not yet fully understood; the mechanism by which AmB adheres to the liquid microdomains with higher fluidity formed by cholesterol and unsaturated phospholipids remains especially unclear. This study examined the adsorption of AmB at different concentrations, 5, 45, 85, and 125 μg/mL, on unsaturated phospholipid membranes containing 50 mol% cholesterol.

Aims: Prior research has established a correlation between increases of High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (HDL-C) levels and alcohol consumption. This study aimed to explore the association between phosphatidylethanol (PEth) levels and the amount of consumed ethanol, utilizing HDL-C as a surrogate marker on a population level. This endeavor offers an adjunct to other studies.

Many ternary mixtures composed of saturated and unsaturated lipids with cholesterol (Chol) exhibit a region of coexistence between liquid-disordered (Ld) and liquid-ordered (Lo) domains, bearing some similarities to lipid rafts in biological membranes. However, biological rafts also contain many proteins that interact with the lipids and modify the distribution of lipids. Here, we extend a previously published lattice model of ternary DPPC/DOPC/Chol mixtures by introducing a small amount of small proteins (peptides).
