Inferior outcome of stand-alone short versus long tibial stem in revision total knee arthroplasty. A retrospective comparative study with minimum 2 year follow-up.

SICOT J

January 2025

Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Sport Medicine, Croix-Rousse Hospital, FIFA Medical Center of Excellence, 69004 Lyon, France - Université de Lyon, Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1, IFSTTAR, LBMC UMR_T9406, 69622 Lyon, France.

Introduction: Revision Total Knee Arthroplasty (RTKA) is complex, and induced bone loss might endanger implant fixation and joint stability. Intramedullary stems improve fixation throughout stress redistribution. The current study aims to compare the performance of short tibial stems with long tibial stems, investigating their intermediate-term radiographic and survival outcomes in RTKA.

Platypnea-orthodeoxia syndrome (POS) is a rare clinical condition characterized by dyspnea and hypoxemia during orthostatism, with relief in the supine position. The diagnosis of POS requires a high clinical suspicion, and its etiology stems from the admixture of venous blood, poor in oxygen, with arterial blood via a shunt. A patent foramen ovale (PFO) is the most commonly encountered anomaly at the root of POS.

Mid-term Clinical and Radiographic Outcomes of the Actis Total Hip System: A Retrospective Study.

Cureus

January 2025

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Okayama University, Okayama, JPN.

Introduction Implant technology for total hip arthroplasty (THA) was developed to improve hip function and patient satisfaction. Actis (DePuy Synthes, Warsaw, IN, USA) is a short fit-and-fill titanium stem, with a medial-collared and triple-taper (MCTT) geometry, that is fully coated with hydroxyapatite (HA). We evaluated the radiographic and clinical outcomes of the Actis Total Hip System during a mean follow-up of five years.

Background: In the United States, African/Black American (henceforth Black) men face significantly higher mortality rates from colorectal cancer (CRC) compared to other gender, racial, and ethnic groups. Although CRC is preventable and treatable with early detection, screening rates among Black men remain low. This study aimed to synthesize existing literature on the barriers and facilitators (determinants) of CRC screening to offer guidance to primary care teams in their efforts to improve screening uptake.

Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) with hardware around the knee is a challenge to preserve bone while boney landmarks are distorted. Robotic assisted (RA) TKA may assist in simultaneous hardware removal and TKA due to preoperative planning and retention of bone. The aim of this study is to identify if there are differences in component fixation, component constraint and functional outcomes dependent during simultaneous removal of hardware (ROH) around the knee and TKA comparing RA-TKA to manual.
