Previous work on carotenoid-iodine complexes is briefly reviewed. The formation of iodine complexes of beta,beta-carotene and of (3R,3' R )-beta,beta-carotene-3,3'-diol (zeaxanthin) has been studied by modern methods including UV/VIS/NIR, IR MS, EPR, ENDOR and NMR (1H, 1H-1H COSY, TOCSY, 2D ROESY, 1H-13C HSQC and 1H-13C HMBC) spectroscopy, and chemical reactions monitored by HPLC, TLC and spectral analysis (VIS, MS, 1H NMR). beta,beta-Carotene formed a solid complex C40H56 x 4I with iodine in hexane and a solvent complex with lambdamax 1010 nm in chlorinated solvents. Iodine was not covalently bound to the carotene. Spectroscopic and chemical evidence is consistent with the representation of the beta,beta-carotene-iodine complex containing iodine in a pi complex with cationic/radical cationic properties. Extensive E/Z isomerisation was noted for all quenching products obtained in acetone, with thiosulfate, by dilution, or by reaction with nucleophile (MeOH). Key products obtained from the beta,beta-carotene-iodine complex were 4',5'-didehydro-4,5'-retro-beta,beta-carotene (isocarotene) and 4-methoxy-beta,beta-carotene. The zeaxanthin-iodine complex was not suitable for a practical synthesis of (3S,3'S)-4',5'-didehydro-4,5'-retro-beta,beta-carotene-3,3'-diol (eschscholtzxanthin).

The primary approach to assessing monitored natural attenuation (MNA) is currently based on a conceptual model utilizing the total contaminant concentrations, assuming a single aqueous species. However, many contaminants, such as metals and radionuclide - including iodine, can exist in multiple species that behave chemically differently in the environment and can exist simultaneously. For example, radioiodine often occurs concurrently as three major aqueous species: iodide (I), iodate (IO), and organo-I, which undergo distinct attenuation pathways and exhibit markedly different mobility and geochemical behavior.

Distinctive role of mutations in distant metastatic thyroid cancer.

Chin J Cancer Res

December 2024

Department of Nuclear Medicine, State Key Laboratory of Complex Severe and Rare Diseases, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, Beijing 100730, China.

Objective: This study investigated the clinical significance of mutations in patients with distant metastatic follicular cell-derived thyroid cancer (FDTC).

Methods: This study included 310 Chinese patients with distant metastatic FDTC. We analyzed the interactions between mutations and other gene alterations and compared the clinicopathological characteristics of patients with pathogenic (P) or likely pathogenic (LP) mutations (n=9), other gene alterations (n=253), and no gene alterations (n=37).

Pulmonary atresia with ventricular septal defect (PA-VSD) is usually diagnosed by transthoracic or fetal echocardiography, with the prenatal diagnosis being feasible and accurate if fetal cardiology services are available. The limitations of transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) in the evaluation of PA-VSD include the complete evaluation of the pulmonary arteries and patent ductus arteriosus, quantitative evaluation of the right ventricle size and function, and delineation of associated cardiac anomalies such as coronary artery anomalies, anomalies of systemic or pulmonary venous return, and complex arch anomalies. Echocardiography also has limitations in evaluating hemodynamics such as flow volumes, shunts, and regurgitant fraction.

Enhancing battery longevity by regulating the solvation chemistry of organic iodide.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

Key Laboratory for Colloid and Interface Chemistry, Ministry of Education, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Shandong University, Jinan 250100, China.

For rechargeable zinc-iodine batteries, the low electrical conductivity of iodine and the easy dissolution of polyiodide in the electrolyte need to be carefully managed to ensure efficient operation. Herein, we introduce an organic iodized salt, formamidinium iodide (CHNI), to modulate the solvation structure of iodide ion, aimed to improve the reaction kinetics of iodine for reversible redox conversion. The participation of formamidinium ion (FA) into solvation structure leads to the formation of the favorable FAIZn(HO) complex, facilitating easier desolvation for redox conversion with iodine.
