Reaction of Mo2(pyphos)4 (1) with [RhCl(CO)2]2 followed by treatment of excess amounts of tBuNC resulted in the clean formation of [Mo2Rh2(tBuNC)4(pyphos)4](X)2 (4a; X = Cl). The X-ray diffraction study as well as spectroscopic analyses of 4c (X = BPh4) implied that there is no direct sigma-bonding interaction between each Rh(I) atom and the Mo2 core. Each Rh(I) atom in 4 can be oxidized concurrently by 2 equiv of [Cp2Fe]PF6 to afford [Mo2Rh2(Cl)2(tBuNC)4(pyphos)4](PF6)2 (5) along with the formation of two Mo-Rh(II) single bonds and the reduction of the bond orders of the Mo-Mo moiety.

The introduction of fluorine atom has attracted considerable interest in molecular design owing to the high electronegativity and the resulting polarization of carbon-fluorine bonds. Simultaneously, sterically-hindered N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have received major interest due to high stabilization of the reactive metal centers, which has paved the way for the synthesis of stable and reactive organometallic compounds with broad applications in main group chemistry, inorganic synthesis and transition-metal-catalysis. Herein, we report the first class of sterically-hindered, fluorinated N-heterocyclic carbenes.

A new, cationic -heterocyclic carbene Rh complex with a tetra-fluorido-borate counter-anion, [Rh(CH)(CHN)(CHP)]BF, has been synthesized and structurally characterized. There are two independent ion pairs in the asymmetric unit. Each complex cation exhibits a distorted square-planar conformation around the Rh atom.

Facile synthesis and bonding of 4-ferrocenyl-1,2,4-triazol-5-ylidene complexes.

Ferrocene-substituted carbenes have emerged as attractive, redox-active ligands. However, among the compounds studied to date, ferrocenylated 1,2,4-triazol-5-ylidenes, which are closely related to the archetypal imidazol-2-ylidenes, are still unknown. Here, we demonstrate that the triazolium salt [CHN(Me)NCHN(Fc)]I (2; Fc = ferrocenyl), obtained by alkylation of 4-ferrocenyl-4-1,2,4-triazole (1) with MeI, reacts selectively with metal alkoxide/hydroxide precursors [(cod)Rh(OMe)] and [(IPr)Au(OH)] (cod = cycloocta-1,5-diene, IPr = 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene) to produce the ferrocene-substituted 1,2,4-triazol-5-ylidene complexes [(cod)RhI{N(Me)NCHN(Fc)}] and [(IPr)Au{N(Me)NCHN(Fc)}]I in good yields.

The development of a new class of concave P-stereogenic phosphorodiamidite ligands, derived from Tröger's bases (TBs), is explored. These ligands, characterized by their remarkable stability and unique structural geometry around the P atom, are used in asymmetric Rh(I)-catalyzed additions of boronic acids to NH-isatins resulting in excellent reactivities and reasonable enantioselectivity (er up to 92:8).

Transition-Metal-Catalyzed C-C Bond Formation from C-C Activation.

Department of Chemistry, Fudan University, Shanghai 200433, P. R. China.

ConspectusC-C single bonds are ubiquitous in organic compounds. The activation and subsequent functionalization of C-C single bonds provide a unique opportunity to synthesize conventionally inaccessible molecules through the rearrangement of carbon skeletons, often with a favorable atom and step economy. However, the C-C bonds are thermodynamically and kinetically inert.
