In this work we present an efficient procedure to evaluate effective pair potentials, compatible with "experimental" structure factors, using a Monte Carlo simulation scheme. The procedure does not require the use of inverse Fourier transforms and is robust and rapidly convergent. As a test case the structure factor of liquid Selenium obtained from a Tight-Binding Molecular Dynamics simulation is inverted to obtain an effective pair potential and, as a by-product, the pair distribution function. The inversion procedure yields a pair structure in perfect agreement with the original molecular dynamics calculations and the analysis of the triplet structure and the dynamics also illustrates the limitations of the use of pair potentials in the description of liquids with strongly directional bonding, such as the covalent liquid Selenium.

Optimizing Point-in-Space Continuous Monitoring System Sensor Placement on Oil and Gas Sites.

We propose a generic, modular framework to optimize the placement of point-in-space continuous monitoring system sensors on oil and gas sites aiming to maximize the methane emission detection efficiency. Our proposed framework substantially expands the problem scale compared to previous related studies and can be adapted for different objectives in sensor placement. This optimization framework is comprised of five steps: (1) simulate emission scenarios using site-specific wind and emission information; (2) set possible sensor locations under consideration of the site layout and any site-specific constraints; (3) simulate methane concentrations for each pair of emission scenario and possible sensor location; (4) determine emissions detection based on the site-specific simulated concentrations; and (5) select the best subset of sensor locations, under a given number of sensors to place, using genetic algorithms combined with Pareto optimization.

Effect of different root canal irrigation regimes microbubble emulsion (MBE) via riboflavin photosensitizer (RFP), cerium oxide (CeO) nanoparticles (NPs), and Nd: YAP laser on antibacterial efficiency, microhardness (MH), smear layer (SL) removal efficacy, and push-out bond strength (PBS) of AH plus sealer to canal dentin. Sixty single-rooted teeth were selected, disinfected, and categorized into four groups based on the type of disinfection. Following disinfection, a pair of samples were randomly selected and visualized under scanning electron microscope (SEM) for SL evaluation.

Conventional light field measurement using a micro-lens array suffers from grid-like artifacts in the refocused image because the sub-aperture images are sampled at linear and equal intervals like a grid pattern. In this study, we propose a method for measuring light field using a pair of wedge prisms and a method for calibrating the sub-aperture position. The epitrochoids trajectory of rays generated by rotating prisms yields unequal intervals and variable sampling of the sub-aperture position.

The detection of mercury ions (Hg) is crucial due to its harmful effects on health and environment. In this article, what we believe to be a novel dual-mode optical fiber sensor incorporating surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is proposed for ultra-trace Hg detection. The sensing probe comprises gold (Au)/graphene oxide (GO) composite membrane structure and Au nanospheres (AuNPs), which are connected via double-stranded DNA.

Ultrashort pulse sources are complex and resource-intensive. To reduce overhead and simplify operations, we had previously developed a method to deliver ultra-short pulses through fiber-optic links to multiple locations and to characterize them remotely using a compact detector module. We created a pulse pair with varying delays at the central location using a pulse shaper before launching them into the fiber links and measured the first and second-order autocorrelations at the satellite location.
