Neutrino oscillations as a probe of dark energy.

Published: August 2004

We consider a class of theories in which neutrino masses depend significantly on environment, as a result of interactions with the dark sector. Such theories of mass varying neutrinos were recently introduced to explain the origin of the cosmological dark energy density and why its magnitude is apparently coincidental with that of neutrino mass splittings. In this Letter we argue that in such theories neutrinos can exhibit different masses in matter and in vacuum, dramatically affecting neutrino oscillations. As an example of modifications to the standard picture, we consider simple models that may simultaneously account for the LSND anomaly, KamLAND, K2K, and studies of solar and atmospheric neutrinos, while providing motivation to continue to search for neutrino oscillations in short baseline experiments such as BooNE.

Majorana quasiparticles and topological phases in 3D active nematics.

Quasiparticles are low-energy excitations with important roles in condensed matter physics. An intriguing example is provided by Majorana quasiparticles, which are equivalent to their antiparticles. Despite being implicated in neutrino oscillations and topological superconductivity, their experimental realizations remain very rare.

Search for CP-Violating Neutrino Nonstandard Interactions with the NOvA Experiment.

Phys Rev Lett

November 2024

Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, Batavia, Illinois 60510, USA.

This Letter reports a search for charge-parity (CP) symmetry violating nonstandard interactions (NSI) of neutrinos with matter using the NOvA Experiment, and examines their effects on the determination of the standard oscillation parameters. Data from ν_{μ}(ν[over ¯]_{μ})→ν_{μ}(ν[over ¯]_{μ}) and ν_{μ}(ν[over ¯]_{μ})→ν_{e}(ν[over ¯]_{e}) oscillation channels are used to measure the effect of the NSI parameters ϵ_{eμ} and ϵ_{eτ}. With 90% CL the magnitudes of the NSI couplings are constrained to be |ϵ_{eμ}|≲0.

Symmetry Oscillations in Strongly Interacting One-Dimensional Mixtures.

Phys Rev Lett

November 2024

Université Côte d'Azur, CNRS, Institut de Physique de Nice, 06200 Nice, France.

Multicomponent quantum mixtures in one dimension can be characterized by their symmetry under particle exchange. For a strongly interacting Bose-Bose mixture, we show that the time evolution of the momentum distribution from an initially symmetry-mixed state is quasiconstant for a SU(2) symmetry conserving Hamiltonian, while it displays large oscillations in time for the symmetry-breaking case where inter- and intraspecies interactions are different. Using the property that the momentum distribution operator at strong interactions commutes with the class-sum operator, the latter acting as a symmetry witness, we show that the momentum distribution oscillations correspond to symmetry oscillations, with a mechanism analogous to neutrino flavor oscillations.

Article Synopsis
  • - The Daya Bay experiment has successfully measured the oscillation amplitude and frequency of reactor antineutrinos over nearly 2,000 days of data, finding significant results about their behavior.
  • - They observed over 3.6 million signal candidates using improved selection and calibration methods, leading to a measurement of sin²2θ₁₃ = 0.0759 with a precision that indicates how antineutrinos change states.
  • - Combining results from different detection methods at Daya Bay, the overall measurement of sin²2θ₁₃ increased precision to 0.0833±0.0022, representing an 8% improvement in understanding these neutrino properties.

The origin of neutrino masses remains unknown. Both the vacuum mass and the dark mass generated by the neutrino interaction with dark matter (DM) particles or fields can fit the current oscillation data. The dark mass squared is proportional to the DM number density and, therefore, varies on the galactic scale with much larger values around the Galactic Center.
