Prevalence of intestinal parasites and Helicobacter pylori co-infection in people with gastrointestinal symptoms in Africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BMC Infect Dis

January 2025

Department of Medical Parasitology, School of Biomedical and Laboratory Sciences, College of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Gondar, Gondar, Ethiopia.

Background: Gastrointestinal infections caused by intestinal parasites and Helicobacter pylori are significant public health issues in Africa, where poor sanitation and limited access to healthcare contribute to high disease burden. Since there was no previous pooled data regarding the intestinal parasites and Helicobacter pylori co-infections among gastrointestinal symptomatic patients in the African context, this review aimed to determine the overall prevalence of intestinal parasites and Helicobacter pylori co-infection in people with gastrointestinal symptoms in Africa.

Methods: The current review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) standards and registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO; CRD42024598993).

Very low prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum histidine-rich protein 2 (pfhrp2) gene deletion in the Brazil, Venezuela, and Guyana tri-border.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Molecular Biology and Malaria Immunology Research Group, Instituto René Rachou (IRR), Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (FIOCRUZ), Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDTs) have been an important diagnostic tool for detecting P. falciparum malaria in resource-limited settings. Most tests are designed to detect the Histidine-rich Protein 2 (HRP2).

The significance of multiplication rate variation in malaria parasites needs to be determined, particularly for Plasmodium falciparum, the species that causes most virulent infections. To investigate this, parasites from cases presenting to hospital in The Gambia and from local community infections were culture-established and then tested under exponential growth conditions in a standardised six-day multiplication rate assay. The multiplication rate distribution was lower than seen previously in clinical isolates from another area in West Africa where infection is more highly endemic.

Progress in antileishmanial drugs: Mechanisms, challenges, and prospects.

PLoS Negl Trop Dis

January 2025

Department of Pathogen Biology, School of Basic Medicine, Tongji Medical College and State Key Laboratory for Diagnosis and Treatment of Severe Zoonotic Infectious Diseases, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China.

Leishmaniasis, a neglected tropical disease caused by Leishmania parasites, continues to pose global health challenges. Current treatments face issues like resistance, safety, efficacy, and cost. This review covers the discovery, mechanisms of action, clinical applications, and limitations of key antileishmanial agents: pentavalent antimonials, amphotericin B, miltefosine, paromomycin, and pentamidine.

Bovine besnoitiosis is a re-emerging cattle disease caused by the apicomplexan parasite , which severely affects individual animal welfare and profitability in cattle industry. We recently showed that tachyzoite exposure to bovine polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) effectively triggers neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation, leading to parasite immobilization hampering host cell infection. So far, the triggers of this defense mechanism remain unclear.
