A simple geometrical model was employed to investigate various elementary techniques during static, sagittal plane lifts. Relationships between the various joint reaction forces were deduced. In particular, it was found that it is possible to simultaneously increase (or decrease) both knee and low back forces. In terms of the total force on the low back, hip, knee, and ankle joints, vertical back lifting is generally not recommended. This is especially true when lifting low-lying objects from the ground. However, minimization of loads is not the only factor to consider when analysing the optimal technique of a certain lifting task. Several other cost functions have been previously proposed. Comparisons derived from minimizing various cost functions suggest that the minimization of the maximum necessary muscle intensity may be the most appropriate in deducing optimal load lifting configurations.

Genetic algorithms have been widely used to explore global minimum points of atomic clusters, and their incorporation with calculations (including density functional theory methods) as local optimization approaches increases their ability to accurately locate the global minimum points on complicated potential energy surfaces. However, the local optimizations using calculations significantly increase the computational cost relative to those based on empirical or semi-empirical calculations. Herein, we develop a genetic algorithm program with an incomplete local optimization strategy at the DFT level.

Systems composed of molecular rotors are promising candidates as quantum devices. In this work, we employ our recently developed density matrix renormalization group approach to study such a rotor system, namely, linear chains of rotating para-water molecules encapsulated in a (6,5)-carbon nanotube. We show that the anisotropic environment provided by the nanotube breaks the inversion symmetry of the chain.
