Histologic classification of prostate cancer.

Anal Quant Cytopathol Histpathol

February 2015

Apart from the typical acinar morphology observed in more than 90% of prostatic adenocarcinomas, a spectrum of morphological variants and prostate cancer subtypes exists. Two nosologically different groups can be distinguished: the variants of conventional acinar cancer and cancers with histological pattern, which are unusual for the prostate. Variants of conventional prostate cancer (pseudohyperplastic, foamy gland, hypernephroid, atrophic, microcystic, with Paneth cell-like changes, with collagenous micronodules, with glomeruloid formations, oncocytic) do not have any known prognostic significance and are graded according to the Gleason system.

Reproductive disturbances in multiple neuroendocrine tumor syndromes.

Endocr Relat Cancer

December 2009

Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Hippocrateion General Hospital, Vas. Sofias 108, Athens, Greece.

In the context of multiple neuroendocrine tumor syndromes, reproductive abnormalities may occur via a number of different mechanisms, such as hyperprolactinemia, increased GH/IGF-1 levels, hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, hypercortisolism, hyperandrogenism, hyperthyroidism, gonadotropin hypersecretion, as well as, tumorigenesis or functional disturbances in gonads or other reproductive organs. Precocious puberty and/or male feminization is a feature of McCune-Albright syndrome (MAS), neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), Carney complex (CNC), and Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS), while sperm maturation and ovulation defects have been described in MAS and CNC. Although tumorigenesis of reproductive organs due to a multiple neuroendocrine tumor syndrome is very rare, certain lesions are characteristic and very unusual in the general population.

The authors present the results of the examination of 61 patients with genitourinary space-occupying lesions, using 18F- fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (PET) in whole body mode. In all cases the diagnosis was verified morphologically. The results demonstrated high diagnostic accuracy of PET, including possibility to determine the extent of oncourological cancer.

The purpose of this study was to work out an adequate operative technique for patients with malignant tumors who also need open heart surgery or procedures on major blood vessels. We had 8 such patients. In 6 of them, a tumor (3 cases hypernephroid cancer and 3 cases retroperitoneal sarcoma) had grown through the inferior vena cava (IVC) up to the right atrium.
