The degree to which evolution repeats itself has implications regarding the major forces driving evolution and the potential for evolutionary biology to be a predictive (versus solely historical) science. To understand the factors that control evolutionary repeatability, we experimentally evolved four replicate hybrid populations of sunflowers at natural sites for up to 14 years and tracked ancestry across the genome. We found that there was very strong negative selection against introgressed ancestry in several chromosomes, but positive selection for introgressed ancestry in one chromosome.

A novel series of azo dyes was successfully synthesized by combining amino benzoic acid and amino phenol on the same molecular framework azo linkage. The structural elucidation of these dyes was carried out using various spectroscopic techniques, including UV-vis, FT-IR, NMR spectroscopy, and HRMS. Surprisingly, the aromatic proton in some dyes exhibited exchangeability in DO, prompting a 2D NMR analysis to confirm this phenomenon.

Redox imbalance driven epigenetic reprogramming and cardiovascular dysfunctions: phytocompounds for prospective epidrugs.

Phytomedicine

January 2025

Post-graduate Department of Biotechnology, Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, 751004, Odisha, India.; Centre of Excellence in Integrated Omics and Computational Biology, Utkal University, Bhubaneswar 751004, Odisha, India.. Electronic address:

Background: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the major contributor to global mortality and are gaining incremental attention following the COVID-19 outbreak. Epigenetic events such as DNA methylation, histone modifications, and non-coding RNAs have a significant impact on the incidence and onset of CVDs. Altered redox status is one of the major causative factors that regulate epigenetic pathways linked to CVDs.

Habitat fragmentation increases the risk of local extinction of small reptiles: A case study on Phrynocephalus przewalskii.

Ecotoxicol Environ Saf

January 2025

Gansu Key Laboratory of Biomonitoring and Bioremediation for Environmental Pollution, School of Life Sciences, Lanzhou University, Lanzhou 730000, China. Electronic address:

Habitat fragmentation represents a multifaceted global conservation threat, exerting both direct and indirect effects on individual animals and communities. Reptiles, particularly smaller species with limited migratory abilities, are especially vulnerable to these changes. This study examines how small reptiles adapt their life history strategies in fragmented habitats and determines whether their responses are primarily due to phenotypic plasticity or genetic adaptation.

The prevalence of childhood obesity is increasing worldwide, along with the associated common comorbidities of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease in later life. Motivated by evidence for a strong genetic component, our prior genome-wide association study (GWAS) efforts for childhood obesity revealed 19 independent signals for the trait; however, the mechanism of action of these loci remains to be elucidated. To molecularly characterize these childhood obesity loci, we sought to determine the underlying causal variants and the corresponding effector genes within diverse cellular contexts.
