Analysis and prediction of atmospheric ozone concentrations using machine learning.

Front Big Data

January 2025

Climate and Environmental Physics, Physics Institute, University of Bern, Bern, Switzerland.

Atmospheric ozone chemistry involves various substances and reactions, which makes it a complex system. We analyzed data recorded by Switzerland's National Air Pollution Monitoring Network (NABEL) to showcase the capabilities of machine learning (ML) for the prediction of ozone concentrations (daily averages) and to document a general approach that can be followed by anyone facing similar problems. We evaluated various artificial neural networks and compared them to linear as well as non-linear models deduced with ML.

Air pollution in cities, especially NO, is linked to numerous health problems, ranging from mortality to mental health challenges and attention deficits in children. While cities globally have initiated policies to curtail emissions, real-time monitoring remains challenging due to limited environmental sensors and their inconsistent distribution. This gap hinders the creation of adaptive urban policies that respond to the sequence of events and daily activities affecting pollution in cities.

A key contribution to X-ray dark-field (XDF) contrast is the diffusion of X-rays by sample structures smaller than the imaging system's spatial resolution; this is related to position-dependent small-angle X-ray scattering. However, some experimental XDF techniques have reported that XDF contrast is also generated by resolvable sample edges. Speckle-based X-ray imaging (SBXI) extracts the XDF by analyzing sample-imposed changes to a reference speckle pattern's visibility.

The ever-increasing energy/power of modern laser sources is inevitably leading to new challenges and opportunities. One of them is the problem of spectral broadening of high-energy femtosecond pulses and their subsequent compression in time in, e.g.

Background: Mental health remains among the top 10 leading causes of disease burden globally, and there is a significant treatment gap due to limited resources, stigma, limited accessibility, and low perceived need for treatment. Problem Management Plus, a World Health Organization-endorsed brief psychological intervention for mental health disorders, has been shown to be effective and cost-effective in various countries globally but faces implementation challenges, such as quality control in training, supervision, and delivery. While digital technologies to foster mental health care have the potential to close treatment gaps and address the issues of quality control, their development requires context-specific, interdisciplinary, and participatory approaches to enhance impact and acceptance.
