Adaptive divergence and increased genetic differentiation among populations can lead to reproductive isolation. In Lake Constance, Germany, a population of invasive three-spined stickleback () is currently diverging into littoral and pelagic ecotypes, which both nest in the littoral zone. We hypothesized that assortative mating behaviour contributes to reproductive isolation between these ecotypes and performed a behavioural experiment in which females could choose between two nest-guarding males.

Males in many species show courtship and mating preferences for certain females over others when given the choice. One of the most common targets of male mate choice in insects is female body size, with males preferring to court and mate with larger, higher-fecundity females and investing more resources in matings with those females. Although this preference is well-documented at the species level, less is known about how this preference varies within species and whether there is standing genetic variation for male mate choice within populations.

Pheromones play a pivotal role in chemical communication across various taxa, with protein-based pheromones being particularly significant in amphibian courtship and reproduction. In this study, we investigate the Emei music frog (Nidirana daunchina), which utilizes both acoustic and chemical signals for communication. Base on a de novo assembled genome of a male Emei music frog, we identify substantial expansion in four pheromone-related gene families associated with chemical communication.

The olfactory system of insects plays a pivotal role in multiple, essential activities including feeding, mating, egg laying, and host localization. The capacity of odorant receptors to recognize odor molecules relies on odorant receptor co-receptors forming heterodimers. Here we report the successful engineering a homozygous mutant strain of diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella) in which the odorant receptor co-receptor PxOrco was silenced using CRISPR/Cas9.
