Blood smear analysis is a well known technique in medical laboratories. Clinical relevance of this analysis and its interpretation are very important. Consequently, monitoring of laboratory performance by an external quality assessment scheme is strongly recommended. Most starting external quality organizers set up a scheme for clinical chemistry. Due to a lack of guidance documents, many organizers are reluctant to offer a hematology scheme. This article aims to be a very practical guidance document for external quality assessment organizers for the set up of blood smear schemes.

Pancytopenia is defined as a decrease in all three myeloid cell lines, usually from a precipitating factor such as an autoimmune condition, prescription drug, or several other factors. The etiology of pancytopenia can be determined through laboratory testing, a peripheral blood smear, and a thorough history and physical examination. Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP/SMX, also known by the brand name of Bactrim® or Septra®) is known to cause pancytopenia in rare cases.

Malaria remains a significant health threat in tropical and subtropical regions. The immune response to Plasmodium falciparum involves both humoral and cellular components, including phagocytosis by neutrophils. However, observing phagocytosis through light microscopy is uncommon.

This case report describes a patient with a medical history of schizophrenia, found in a coma with hyperthermia, likely due to classic heatstroke. The white blood cells observed on the blood smear showed cytological abnormalities characterized by multilobed nuclei, which could be early signs of cell death. The evolution into multiorgan failure led rapidly to death.

Comparative diagnostic performance of recombinant Tams1 protein based dot-ELISA in detecting tropical theileriosis in naturally infected cattle.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Department of Veterinary Parasitology, U. P. Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Pashu Chikitsa Vigyan Vishwavidyalaya Evam Go Anusandhan Sansthan (DUVASU), Mathura, 281001, India.

This study is the first to conduct a sero-surveillance of Bovine Tropical Theileriosis (BTT) caused by the protozoan parasite Theileria annulata (T. annulata) using a recombinant Tams1 protein-based dot-ELISA in cattle, and to compare its efficacy with plate-ELISA, single PCR, nested PCR, and blood microscopy. The goal was to identify the most effective method for the early and accurate detection of theileriosis, which significantly impacts livestock through reduced milk yield and increased mortality.

[Acquisition of Primary Ph Bone Marrow Cells and Establishment of Ph B-ALL Mouse Model].

Zhongguo Shi Yan Xue Ye Xue Za Zhi

December 2024

Blood Disease Institute, Xuzhou Medical University,Xuzhou 221000, Jiangsu Province, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The objective of the study was to harvest primary Philadelphia chromosome-positive (Ph) cells from B-acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) and create a B-ALL mouse model.
  • Methods included infecting bone marrow cells from C57BL/6J mice with a retrovirus, followed by the transplantation of transfected cells into irradiated mice, resulting in the establishment of multiple generations of Ph cells.
  • The results showed significant health deterioration in the mice post-transplant, with pathological features such as weight loss and leukemic cell infiltration in the liver, confirming the successful creation of a B-ALL mouse model through progressive passages of Ph cells.
