Background: The determination of malignancy in follicular patterned thyroid lesions is based on postoperative histologic findings. Therefore, affected patients are referred for surgery, although only 20% will have a final diagnosis of malignancy. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of galectin-3 as a marker of malignancy in these lesions.
Methods: Fifty-four tissue specimens of follicular patterned thyroid lesions were immunohistochemically stained for galectin-3. Area and intensity scores were recorded.
Results: Significant differences were found between the benign and malignant lesions. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive values, and negative predictive values of galectin-3 staining were 82%, 68%, 75%, and 77%, respectively (p=.0002). Significant differences were also found between the subgroups of benign and malignant lesions (p < or =.05).
Conclusions: Galectin-3 staining is highly sensitive for malignancy in follicular patterned thyroid lesions. Diagnostic problems may arise in the presence of Hurthle cell proliferation or minimally invasive follicular carcinoma.

Background: Reproductive dysfunctions of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and blood anti-mullerian hormone (AMH) concentration are significantly influenced by the dietary advanced glycation end products (AGEs). The interplay between AGEs and their soluble form of receptor, might exert a protective role on the follicular environment and affect AMH concentration. This study investigated the relationship between soluble receptor for advanced glycation end-products (sRAGE) levels in follicular fluid (FF) and serum AMH levels in PCOS and non-PCOS women.

Primary pulmonary lymphoma (PPL) is a rare entity often underdiagnosed due to its non-specific clinical presentation. Our aim is to share our experience in the management of these lesions, which should be considered in the differential diagnosis of nodules affecting the lung parenchyma. We retrospectively studied a total of 14 patients who had undergone surgery between 2013 and 2021.

The scientific discipline of endocrinology has been invaluable to our understanding of the estrous cycle. In the second half of the twentieth century the development of immunoassay technologies provided a rapid and sensitive method to quantify circulating concentrations of reproductive hormones and relate them to stage of the estrous cycle and physiological status of the animal. Ovarian ultrasonography provided the ability to track the growth and regression of ovarian structures within the same animal across the estrous cycle in real time and, in combination with hormonal profiling, accurately identify mechanisms regulating the estrous cycle and early pregnancy.

Background: Epstein-Barr virus-positive (EBV) inflammatory follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (IFDCS) is a rare stroma-derived neoplasm of lymphoid tissues. It typically involves the spleen and liver, and is often associated with the presence of EBV. Because of its nonspecific clinical and imaging findings, making a correct diagnosis at the time of initial diagnosis is challenging.

Male androgenetic alopecia (MAA) is quite common and worsens with age, with a significant impact on quality of life, and is increasingly a reason for consultation with a dermatologist. The etiopathogenesis of MAA is multifactorial and genetic and hormonal influences stand out. MAA starts with the process of follicular miniaturization in diverse phenotypic patterns.
