A Mueller matrix for scattering by a rough plane surface of a glass hemisphere was simulated by using a micro-facet model. The algorithms are formulated in vector representation in terms of the input and output directions. The single-facet scattering simulation used the results of the Kirchhoff integral for medium rough surfaces with exponential height distribution. Scatterings by two or more facets were also simulated. For a fixed angle between the incident and the detection directions, the transmission scattering and its polarization properties were symmetric when plotted against the off-specular incident angle. The single-facet model generated no depolarization or polarization change. When double-facet scattering was included, polarizations were changed appreciably while depolarization was still very small. Depolarization increased appreciably when scattering by higher orders was included. The simulated results that include all orders of scattering fit excellently to the measured scattering transmittance and its polarization and depolarization.

Background: Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare disease, most prevalent in children. Ultrasound is a noninvasive, cheap, and widely available technique. However, systematic elucidation of sonographic features of LCH and treatment related follow-up are relatively few, resulting in overall underestimation of the clinical value of ultrasound in diagnosing and monitoring LCH.

Optimization of the manufacturing process based on scientific evidence is essential for quality control of active pharmaceutical ingredients. Real-time monitoring can ensure the production of stable quality crystals in the crystallization process. Raman spectroscopy is an attractive tool for pharmaceutical quality evaluation and process analytical technology because of its ability to analyze samples non-destructively and rapidly.

Background: Permethrin is a pesticide used to kill insects, and once used in excess, it poses a great threat to the environment and human health, therefore, it is necessary to realize the rapid and accurate detection of permethrin. Fiber optic surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) probes have the advantages of small volume and can be used for remote monitoring, which have great potential for application in achieving in-situ detection of pesticide residues.
Results: Fiber taper waist (FTW) SERS probes modified by silver nanocubes-graphene oxide (Ag NCs-GO) composite structures were prepared for in situ detection of permethrin in lake water.

Cardiovascular disease is one of the foremost causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) identified as a significant risk factor for subsequent ischemic events. Elevated LDL-C contributes to vascular injury and fibrosis by upregulating the expression of connective tissue growth factor and collagen IV, which leads to endothelial cell dysfunction that initiates the process of atherosclerotic diseases. Currently, there is an absence of clear, risk-defined criteria to identify patients who are in greater needs for intensive LDL-C reduction, particularly with PCSK9 inhibitors.

A comprehensive study was conducted to determine the effects of water and ethylene glycol (EG) on biomass pretreatment using a binary deep eutectic solvent (DES) containing choline chloride and acetic acid (1ChCl3AC) at a mole ratio of 1:3. Different quantities of water and EG were combined with 1ChCl3AC to pretreat wheat straw, miscanthus, eucalyptus, and sorghum stalk at 130 °C for 6 h. The changes in nanopore structure and surface roughness of wet biomass, as well as biomass crystallinity after 1ChCl3AC-based pretreatment were investigated using XRD and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS).
