A heterobifunctional photocleavable cross-linker based on an o-nitrobenzyl ester moiety was synthesized. The cross-linker has N-hydroxysuccinimidyl and disulfide groups attached at each end and thus can anchor a protein to a gold-coated substrate surface. Steady-state spectroscopic studies suggest that the cross-linker undergoes a clean C-O fragmentation upon irradiation with a quantum yield of 0.1. Consequently, immobilized proteins (such as avidin or antibodies) on a substrate surface can be released efficiently (>95%) under UV irradiation (lambda > 300 nm) without degrading the protein functionality. We also demonstrated protein delivery via bioconjugation of protein molecules to a gold-coated atomic-force microscope (AFM) tip. When the proteins are photoreleased from the AFM tip, they are delivered to the substrate surface as protein clusters of uniform size. This has been confirmed using both AFM and fluorescence microscopy. The application of bioconjugation in this study opens a new avenue for tunable surface modification and controllable protein delivery in studies of biological systems on the nanometer scale.

Silver nanowire (Ag NW)-based elastic conductors have been considered a promising candidate for key stretchable electrodes in wearable devices. However, the weak interface interaction of Ag NWs and elastic substrates leads to poor durability of electronic devices. For everyday usage, an additional self-healing ability is required to resist scratching and damage.

SnO thin films were deposited on Si substrates by radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering technique, and the effects of different sputtering power (60-90 W) on the structural, surface morphological, and electrical properties of the film were investigated with XRD, Raman, AFM, SEM, and fore point probe. The deposited SnO film at lower RF was amorphous, while well-defined intense XRD signals at higher RF power indicated significant improvement in crystalline nature. E and A vibrating modes related to SnO were clearly observed in the Raman spectra.

Liquid metals are highly conductive like metallic materials and have excellent deformability due to their liquid state, making them rather promising for flexible and stretchable wearable sensors. However, patterning liquid metals on soft substrates has been a challenge due to high surface tension. In this paper, a new method is proposed to overcome the difficulties in fabricating liquid-state strain sensors.

Heterogeneous catalysts for parahydrogen-induced polarization (HET-PHIP) would be useful for producing highly sensitive contrasting agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the liquid phase, as they can be removed by simple filtration. Although homogeneous hydrogenation catalysts are highly efficient for PHIP, their sensitivity decreases when anchored on porous supports due to slow substrate diffusion to the active sites and rapid depolarization within the channels. To address this challenge, we explored 2D metal-organic layers (MOLs) as supports for active Rh complexes with diverse phosphine ligands and tunable hydrogenation activities, taking advantage of the accessible active sites and chemical adaptability of the MOLs.

Unlabelled: The reflexive translation of symbols in one chemical language to another defined genetics. Yet, the co-linearity of codons and amino acids is so commonplace an idea that few even ask how it arose. Readout is done by two distinct sets of proteins, called aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (AARS).
