Health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids.

Evidence suggests that omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids play an integral role in cell membrane function and development of the brain and eyes. Optimising intake appears to confer many benefits, including reduced risk of heart disease and possibly a reduced likelihood of behavioural problems, depression and inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. Although there is some disagreement on what level of intake is optimal, British diets are low in omega-3 fatty acids. Good sources include oily fish and novel sources include fortified eggs and oils derived from microalgae.

Multiple myeloma (MM) remains an incurable hematological malignancy that necessitates the identification of novel therapeutic strategies. Here, we report that intracellular levels of very long chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) control the cytotoxicity of MM chemotherapeutic agents. Inhibition of VLCFA biosynthesis reduced cell death in MM cells caused by the proteasome inhibitor, bortezomib.

Severe pulmonary arterial hypertension and cardiogenic shock in acute systemic lupus erythematosus.

We describe a woman in her late 20s with newly diagnosed systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), who presented with fulminant pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) requiring inotropic and extracorporeal support. She was established on triple pulmonary vasodilator therapy with concurrent aggressive immunosuppression; however, treatment was complicated by infection and diffuse alveolar haemorrhage, necessitating delays in immunosuppression and withdrawal of epoprostenol. Despite this, with ongoing suppression of her SLE, her pulmonary haemodynamics improved, with normal pressures on right heart catheterisation several months later allowing stepdown to sildenafil monotherapy.

Small-molecule pectin (SMP) extracted from the leaves of Premna ligustroides Hemsl, with a molecular weight range of 5000-35,000 Da, has demonstrated anti-inflammatory and lipid-lowering properties in vitro. This study explored the effects of SMP on hypercholesterolemia in mice, with a focus on inflammation, lipid profiles, and cholesterol metabolism. Mice received SMP at doses of 607, 303, and 152 mg/kg body weight.
