The scalable superacid solvent, radical-initiated aryldiazonium functionalization process produces individual SWNTs without the need for surfactant wrapping, centrifugation, or sonication. This work provides a facile pathway to aryl sulfonic acid-functionalized SWNTs that are not roped or bundled, and the functionalized nanotubes are water soluble.

The fabrication of freestanding complex oxide membranes: Can we avoid using water?

J Mater Res

October 2024

Department of Energy Conversion and Storage, Technical University of Denmark (DTU), Building 310, 2800 Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark.

Unlabelled: Recent advances in fabricating scalable two-dimensional or freestanding functional materials have shown promise for their use in modern silicon-based electronics and future technologies. A growing interest is in creating freestanding complex oxide membranes using new methods like epitaxial lift-off and mechanical exfoliation to enhance their quality and integrity. Despite these advances, it remains challenging to consistently produce high-quality freestanding oxide membranes on a large scale for practical use.

In situ exfoliated natural polysaccharide Cordia myxa (CMX) is used to promote the utilization of zinc-oxide nanoparticles for eco-friendly catalytic hydrogenation of p-nitrophenol (p-NP) and microbial growth inhibition. Polysaccharide-mediated biosynthetic nanocomposite materials are interesting because they are cheap, green, and environmentally friendly. This study uses CMX gum as a bioreduction to produce multifunctional, environmentally friendly zinc-oxide nanocomposites (ZnO NPs).

Seashell-Inspired Switchable Waterborne Coatings with Complete Biodegradability, Intrinsic Flame-Retardance, and High Transparency.

Inspired by the "brick-and-mortar" structure and the whole lifecycle eco-friendliness of seashells, we have constructed a proof-of-concept and environmentally friendly coating with switchable aqueous processability, complete biodegradability, intrinsic flame retardance, and high transparency, via using natural biomass and montmorillonite (MMT). We first designed and synthesized cationic cellulose derivatives (CCD) as the macromolecular surfactants, which effectively exfoliated MMT to obtain nano-MMT/CCD aqueous dispersions. Subsequently, via a simple spray-coating process and a post-treatment process with a salt aqueous solution, the transparent, hydrophobic, and flame-retardant coating was fabricated with a "brick-and-mortar" structure.

Gum Arabic-mediated liquid exfoliation of transition metal dichalcogenides as photothermic anti-breast cancer candidates.

Int J Biol Macromol

Department of Bionano Engineering, Center for Bionano Intelligence Education and Research, Hanyang University, Ansan 426-791, South Korea. Electronic address:

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have gained considerable attention for a broad range of applications, including cancer therapy. Production of TMD nanosheets using liquid exfoliation provides an inexpensive and facile route to achieve high yields. In this study, we developed TMD nanosheets using gum arabic as an exfoliating and stabilizing agent.

Novel polymer nanocomposites of methacryloyloxy ethyl dimethyl hexadecyl ammonium bromide-modified montmorillonite (O-MMt) with acrylamide/sodium -styrene sulfonate/methacryloyloxy ethyl dimethyl hexadecyl ammonium bromide (ASD/O-MMt) were synthesized via in situ polymerization. The molecular structures of the synthesized materials were confirmed using Fourier-transform infrared and H-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. X-ray diffractometry and transmission electron microscopy revealed well-exfoliated and dispersed nanolayers in the polymer matrix, and scanning electron microscopy images revealed that the well-exfoliated nanolayers were strongly adsorbed on the polymer chains.
