Human gamma delta T cells are known to respond at high frequencies to pathogenic mycobacteria. Here we show that opportunistic strains of mycobacteria share with pathogenic mycobacteria the ability to trigger at high frequencies human V gamma 9V delta 2 T-cell-receptor-positive T lymphocytes. Stimulating ligands were present in part in a low-molecular-weight fraction of lysates from opportunistic mycobacteria, as has been found for pathogenic strains. These results support the view that postnatal exposure to ever-present opportunistic mycobacteria may be a driving force for the numerical expansion of the V gamma 9V delta 2 T-cell subset in adolescence.

An extensive thermochemical study of γ-undecanolactone and δ-undecanolactone has been developed using two complementary calorimetric techniques. The combustion energy of each compound was determined by static-bomb combustion calorimetry, and the corresponding enthalpy of vaporization was determined by high-temperature Calvet microcalorimetry, in which both properties of each compound are reported at = 298.15 K.

γ- and δ-lactones were formed by bromine oxidation of commercially available D-lyxose, as confirmed by IR analysis. The former was isolated, and its structure was confirmed by NMR spectra and X-ray analysis. In this structure, the presence of both intermolecular and intramolecular hydrogen bonds was found.

Background/objectives: The current study explores the impact of CLL on γδ T cells and, in an attempt to better understand the sources of immunosuppression, assesses the impact of M-MDSCs on γδ T cells in vitro.

Methods: The study included 163 CLL patients and 34 healthy volunteers. γδ T cells were screened with flow cytometry, including NKG2D, Fas, FasL, and TRAIL staining.

The role of mitochondria as the electric engine of cells is well established. Over the past two decades, accumulating evidence has pointed out that, despite the presence of a highly active glycolytic pathway (Warburg effect), a functional and even upregulated mitochondrial respiration occurs in cancer cells to meet the need of high energy and the biosynthetic demand to sustain their anabolic growth. Mitochondria are also the primary source of intracellular ROS.
